Review

Fascinating - and all the better for being digestible and readable. Business schools should study its pages (Chris Blackhurst Evening Standard)

Michael Hayman and Nick Giles blow apart traditional theories of business success in this landmark title on how to make it as a modern-day entrepreneur (Elitebusiness)

'Guerrilla upstarts ... bonafide architects of tomorrow's business-scape' (Director)

Good things happen when you are in their vicinity. I recommend them highly (Alain de Botton (on Seven Hills))

Seven Hills are a smart outfit and an exciting business (Peter Jones CBE, Dragons' Den investor)

Technology is fundamentally changing the way people live, work and travel and a new generation of innovative companies has emerged in recent years. In Mission, Michael Hayman and Nick Giles pinpoint the importance of social purpose to the entrepreneurs and businesses who are transforming societies around the world. It is mission that makes successful businesses stand out, and this book shows how companies are able to define, build and communicate their purpose in order to prosper (Joe Gebbia, Co-founder and Chief Product Officer, Airbnb)

Mission shows how purpose has become essential to today's business leaders. Capitalism can best flourish if based on new, ethical and socially-motivated foundations and this book shows why purpose-driven businesses are winning out, and acting as a force for good in society (John Mackey, founder, Whole Foods)

In Mission, Michael Hayman and Nick Giles show very clearly why standout companies are increasingly defined by purpose and the ambition to effect positive change . . . This book is an apt appreciation of the business culture that is developing and has developed in the UK over recent years, one in which I have seen its authors play an important role in cultivating (HRH The Duke of York, KG)

In the battle for talent, it is a central commercial purpose that sorts the great from the good. Any business that wants to stand out in today's crowded market needs to ask themselves what they are really trying to achieve and why their company matters. This book shows you how mission is a critical tool for leaders serious about scaling their business into a global player (Sherry Coutu, board member, LinkedIn and London Stock Exchange)

A whistle-stop tour of some of the world's most interesting entrepreneurial companies. The book offers a new perspective ... read it with a pen and paper - it will ensure you're on the right mission. (Forbes)

Engaging, highly readable, provocative ... If you are considering setting up on your own, or have already done so, you are likely to come away with at least one or two useful tips. Even if you don't run your own business, you will almost certainly enjoy reading the experiences of those who have in this book (MoneyWeek)

I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to everyone, not just wannabe Bransons and Zuckerbergs. Its advice and insight can be applied to many areas of life, not just business.

Written by two entrepreneurs who have built a very successful business from the ground up, this book shows us how budding entrepreneurs and existing businesses can succeed in today's changed marketplace and achieve acclaim in the wider world. It's also a warning about how even established and healthy companies can fail and fall out of favour in a rapidly changing world: Blockbuster being a poignant example.

It takes us through several high profile examples - inc. Ella's Kitchen, Uber, and Airbnb - and explains why business cannot just be about the pursuit of profit any longer.

Yes they state profit matters, but Michael and Nick help us realise making a profit is no more the purpose of business than breathing is the purpose of life: profit is a byproduct of ceaselessly campaigning for a heartfelt mission.

To succeed in today's environment, a business must have an all-consuming ethical mission at the heart of everything it does. It must be believed, championed and campaigned for by everyone in the business. If not, time-poor - not to mention cynical, advert-drenched and PR-wary - customers simply won't believe in that business and will take their money, support and attention elsewhere.

This is packed with insight, tips, advice and takeaways, more than enough to help the next Zuckerberg be born and succeed but the tip I loved the best is about how nailing your colours to the mast, or burning your boats as Michael and Nick put it, is the most convincing way to persuade and prove to your customers just how committed you are to your your cause.

I am still buzzing after finishing Mission - marvellous! Agree with the previous reviews but would also add that what makes this book so captivating is its authenticity. Michael and Nick have been on their own, very real, mission over the last five years or so and are able to share their personal stories as well as those of an extraordinary array of truly heroic entrepreneurs. The book is also a great reflection of our times, from the importance of collaboration to the clarion call that business should be a force for good in society. We will all reflect on Mission in years to come as an era-defining record of this transformational age for business and entrepreneurship.

There are a lot of books out there that aim to bring you lessons from successful entrepreneurs. Not many succeed in doing so because they either don't tell a good story, are too complex or feel a little too textbook like. Mission is different. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and found myself glued to each page. There's a lot to learn here and some fantastic takeaways for anybody's professional life. I have a lot of respect for Michael and Nick and this book is simply a stellar achievement. Inspirational and a must-read.

In Mission, Michael and Nick have successful brought together their own entrepreneurial experiences with some of the most exciting businesses of today. The result is a heady cocktail of advice, approaches and learning that can act as a coda for the 21st century business. It is clear that this book marks a key watershed in thinking about growth companies and will be of benefit to the entrepreneur looking to take their first tentative steps as much as it will be to the corporate executive seeking to drive change in their organisation.

It stands alone in the arena of business books, benefiting from a lightness of prose, a fast-paced narrative and hard-hitting insights. I really can't recommend it highly enough.

"In just a few short years, Michael & Nick have redefined the meaning of 'PR', inventing a brand new 'Campaigning Company' which reflects the aims, ambitions and objectives of the leaders of tomorrow's companies - ones who are the 'Carers, Sharers & Darers'. I am delighted to have watched Seven Hills build significant momentum over their first few years, and am sure in reading their book, many lessons can be learned in building a business in today's new world of business. If Tripadvisor were are asked to 'Rate' or 'Slate' this book, it'd be a RATE."
Will King, Founder, King of Shaves & The Entrepreneur-in-Residence Company.

Michael Hayman and Nick Giles should be out on their respective soapboxes in every town in Britain to promote this book. Succinct, cogently argued and with some wonderful and wacky stories to back it up, Mission shows how every successful business should be able to define its core objective in a sentence, believe in it and communicate it to others in order to win through in an intensely competitive business environment in which the customer is not only better informed than ever before but also demands an ethical foundation to business. Who would have thought a clothing company could promote a new jacket with the words, 'Do you really need to buy this?' Although the tone of the book is decidedly upbeat - all successful entrepreneurs are optimists - there is clear recognition that many new start-ups will fail and that failure can be instructive and used to powerful effect.
The lessons of the book are universally applicable. Have faith in what you do, communicate that faith to others, act it out and keep on innovating to stay ahead. It should be required reading for all school leavers, FE colleges and students and for their teachers.
This is not a how-to business book. It is an inspiring story, the distillation of a wealth of experience, conveyed with verve, humour and flair. The authors maintain that successful campaigns have the punters responding: 'I love it.' Well, I loved this and read it at one sitting. Highly recommended.
