Carola Roland is murdered and almost everyone living in the same block of flats is a suspect. Miss Silver has already been consulted by one of the residents about a blackmailer. Mrs Underwood has her niece Meade staying with her following her near drowning when the ship in which she was travelling from America is torpedoed and sunk. Her fiancé Giles Armitage is feared drowned until Meade encounters him one day though he has lost his memory. Carola Roland attempts to blackmail him because of his memory loss.

All the residents of the flats have secrets to hide and Miss Silver soon starts to unravel them in her usual inimitable style. The novel features Frank Abbot and his superior Inspector Lamb and they welcome Miss Silver's insights into the residents when they have so many suspects and no leads. I particularly enjoyed this novel as I did not manage to work out who the murderer was though the clues - and red herrings - are all there for the reader to see.

The Miss Silver crime novels are not about graphic violence they are character studies of the people involved - both murderer and victim - and the way being a suspect affects innocent and guilty people. They make a welcome change from today's graphic violence and bad language. If you enjoy Agatha Christie, Dorothy L Sayers, Gladys Mitchell or Ngaio Marsh then you will probably enjoy Patricia Wentworth.

A likeable story - gentle narrative and not too much jeopardy!

Characterization can be a little artificial at times, but this is what makes it intellectually undemanding.

This is pleasant, relaxing reading. The murders are non-gory and details of the corpses are not usually very explicit. The whole point of the "Miss Silver" books is character study and close observation of human behaviour in a variety of situations. However, the action is very slow and the plot unravels gradually.I have read most of them and would not hesitate to give them to my older relatives. Very enjoyable holiday reading.
