The Misfit Shine is a sleek personal monitor that syncs with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and the free Shine app to track your activity level. You can wear it anywhere on your body for any type of activity. Simply tap it and a cluster of lights glows through the metal shell to indicate your progress toward your daily goal.
Use the free Shine app to set your goals. Then sync the data collected by your Shine monitor to the app by simply placing it on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch screen. Any time you want, you can tap the app to see your progress. It's all done without buttons, cables, or recharging.
Built to last a lifetime, Shine is carved from aircraft-grade aluminum. An easy-to-change battery provides power for up to four months. And the unit is water-resistant, so you can include swimming in your training regimen.
Crafted like a piece of jewellery, Shine is a tiny disc with a lovely halo of lights that light up in relation to your activity level. It complements any style clothing. You can wear it anywhere-on your wrist, shoe, bra strap, belt, or around your neck. It comes with a one-size-fits-all Sport Band for your wrist.
Live smart. Look sharp.
Shine was designed to complement any fashion statement. Diamond-cut aluminum makes the Shine as beautiful and durable as your favorite jewelry and watches. And with a thinness of just 4mm at its edge, it’s so comfortable you’ll forget you’re wearing it. Wear it how you want, wherever you want for any occasion.
While it is waterproof up to 50 metres, the all-aluminum device also has thousands of micro laser drilled holes on its surface that let LED lights to shine through. These act as the device’s interface by illustrating the activity mode the device is currently tracking in with various LED configurations that represent running, swimming, or biking.
Keep time with Shine.
Using 12 LED lights Shine also functions as a watch, using its elegant, minimalist interface. Long-lasting battery up to six months means low maintenance: it looks after you, not the other way round. Three modes monitor normal activity levels, work-out intensity and sleep. It also tells time, so no need to wear a watch.
Misfit Shine was made to last a lifetime and designed to complement any fashion statement. Carved out of a solid block of aircraft-grade aluminum, it is super strong and waterproof.

Simple, Smart and Elegant
How did you come up with the idea for this product?
Part of the idea behind the lean startup is to prove demand, and build products in a rapid, user-centered design cycle.
What makes your product special?
As well as being a gorgeous all-metal construction, Shine is also: Elegant: a tiny all-metal disc with a beautiful halo of lights Precious: precision crafted like jewelry to be worn on any occasion Goal-driven: tap to see progress towards your daily activity goal Bold design: no buttons, no cables, no recharging Amazing sync: just place it on your smartphone and it syncs, even in airplane mode Personal: set your own goals, visualize data, and get insights tailored for you
What has been the best part of your startup experience?
We're focused on developing great wearable products: things that a lot of people would wear all the time for a long time. Like jeans and t-shirts. We aim to pioneer the emerging world of wearables, by making products and services in the consumer health and fitness space to inspire people be more active and develop healthy habits. We were founded in 2011, and Misfit Shine is our first product.

They had great potential at that time, Fitbit was also just starting out... the software was buggy and while the Shine was superior in aluminium it continually fell out of the cheap poorly designed bracelet.
As a tech I was also interested in developing, they promised an API but never delivered.... they started messing about with fashion fads
And so to the present, holding off on Apple Watch for now, but as a swimmer spotted the Speedo Misfit, great this will fill the gap and only £60, and they must have got their act together my now.
It seems the Speedo version is no longer available, but ordered the standard version, it arrived in nice packaging, but will not connect with my iPhone, very poor images on the quick start leaflet
Auto generated issue ticket has not been acted on,
This company is on the wrong track, they are all show and no substance, think they have a very small tech team. Incidentally the "Misfit" name is from a great Apple advert, but a not a good company name, except it is ironically appropriate, also this company was founded by Scully who managed to run Apple into the ground, don't now how these guys are still in the game
The good points are that the devices look like something off of Star Trek, the LEDs are nearly the same colour as the metal case and so when they light up it was unexpected and very beautiful.
It is easy to set up the devices to sync with an iPhone. Soon it becomes second nature to periodically check how you're doing throughout the day.
For us it is working, it's driving us to be more active. Once you start to build up a number of days where you hit your target, you don't want to end your run.
Went out a few nights for a half hour stroll at 9pm to make sure I hit the target.
Only a couple of negative things. The double tap to show progress/the time doesn't always work. I'd say it works 25% of the time. It's annoying for it not to reliably work if you're showing it to a friend. The other thing is that it is possible to 'cheat' and fool the device into thinking you are exercising when you're just gently moving your arm about.
The magnet inside is very strong: good for holding the battery in place but makes it VERY difficult to remove the battery again.
Why am I removing the battery? Well, what I was not told is that this device can only sync with a mobile/tablet/whatever with Android version 4.3 or greater, and with Bluetooth BLE. My HTC one x apparently is not getting updated any time soon. Lucky for me I was due a phone upgrade anyway!
After acquiring my new phone I managed to download the app - no problem, and sync my Misfit. I am not very impressed with the app: it is very basic and seems to only monitor when you are "active" or sleeping, and uses a points system to tell you if you have achieved your goal (number of points). I cannot tell what you need to do for one point, so I think this system is not well thought out.
As for the wrist strap and the clip: I mainly use the clip as I feel it holds the Misfit better and I don't have to wear it on my wrist with my watch! I do not like the feeling of the plastic strap against my skin, and was expecting a 'classier' strap than this.
I would like to have a product with a heart rate monitor, and a more malleable app. Something that counts calories and enables you to enter food which you have eaten etc.
I will be waiting for the new Windows fitness band.
At all, missed the window to returns trying to arrange with Misfit customer service but seems negative response too. First one worked for about 4 months swimming weekly, second change of battery and never worked again many batteries tried later, misfit consulting and video instruction on you tube. Disappointing £100 over lost as I could've gone to Fitbit instead and probably will be our next one in our house.
Easy to set up, and use.
The only gripe, which isn't a complaint as such as it was highlighted in the instructions, more of a wish-list for the next incarnation of the product is its battery use. Two months in and we've had to change the battery already.
Other than that, worth the money.
