From Victor Hugo`s classic French novel of the nineteenth century to Tom Hooper`s award winning blockbuster, Les Misérables has undergone one of the most successful transitions from book to stage to screen. In this new documentary, the scintillating journey of Hugo`s universal story is traced from book to stage to screen with contributions from those who have starred in and helped to create the entertainment phenomenon which has captured a place in everyone`s hearts. Helmed by entertainment and celebrity journalist Neil Sean, this insightful documentary traces the events of the Paris insurrection in 1832 and features excerpts from the restored 1978 Les Misérables lm starring Anthony Perkins alongside interviews with Frances Ruffelle, Hugh Jackman, Nick Jonas, Tom Hooper, Alfie Boe, Amanda Seyfried, Sir Cameron Mackintosh and Anne Hathaway. When Cameron Mackintosh decided to make a musical of Jean Valjean`s search for redemption, critics slated its first London performance in 1985, as literary critics had done with the publication of Victor Hugo`s novel in 1862. But nearly thirty years later over 60 million people have seen the stage play and many more will watch the movie or read Hugo s novel, which is amongst the ten greatest novels of all time. This programme has not been endorsed by, and is not an official release of, Cameron Mackintosh (Overseas) Limited, Working Title Films Ltd or Universal Pictures International UK & Eire Ltd. This programme does not contain any performance, footage or music from, and is not associated with, the official Stage Production, the motion picture Les Misérables (2012) or their creators, actors or directors.

Instead - wait for the dvd of the movie and the extras that will be on that, buy the Double Disk sets of the 10th and 25th Anniversary concerts and treat yourself to the wonderful book - "Les Miserable's from Stage to Screen" by Benedict Nightingale and Martyn Palmer. Just avoid this and save your money. I wish I had saved mine! (Shame there's not an option here to give it no stars!)
It has no footage or music from the Les Miersable musical stage show or Film.
It just has interviews from 1980's to 2012, and not very well put together.
A total cash in buy the company that made it.
I wish i never purchased it.
Whilst Victor Hugo's masterpiece has been brilliantly transposed into a great musical, and some truly memorable cinema, particularly the Tom Hooper version. (I know there has been much controversy over the casting of 'non singers', but Javert was played superbly by Russell Crowe, and the fact that the singing was recorded 'live' resulted in such a strong production.) I greatly enjoyed Tom Hooper's 'King's Speech' and was delighted to see Helena Bonham-Carter appear as Mme Thenardier, joining Baron Sacha Cohen. BUT, this new documentary DVD ...
This DVD documentary would have been so much more interesting if it had shown more clips about the making of the films? I agree with the sentiments of the majority of reviews, which are not inaccurately portraying the excellence of the 2012 film, as a couple of the reviews appear to be doing, which is totally misleading. We are supposed to be reviewing the DVD - New Documentary, not the 2012 film!
At least Amazon are honest enough to print all reviews ... just don't waste your money on this DVD!
