About the Author

Victor Marie Hugo (26 February 1802 – 22 May 1885) was a French poet, novelist, and dramatist of the Romantic movement. He is considered one of the greatest and best known French writers. In France, Hugo's literary fame comes first from his poetry but also rests upon his novels and his dramatic achievements. Among many volumes of poetry, Les Contemplations and La Légende des siècles stand particularly high in critical esteem. Outside France, his best-known works are the novels Les Misérables, 1862, and Notre-Dame de Paris, 1831 (known in English as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame). Though a committed royalist when he was young, Hugo's views changed as the decades passed; he became a passionate supporter of republicanism, and his work touches upon most of the political and social issues and artistic trends of his time. He was buried in the Panthéon. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Unlike most people, I didn't actually see the musical before I decided to read the book. I listened to the recording of it. Then I had to raise money for a school trip, and mum said she'd pay me £5 if I read Les Miserables. So ... I thought oh no, this is going to be long, boring and difficult. Well, it was long. And in some places difficult. But definetly definetly definetly not boring. It's such an amazing book that after I read it I thought I might as well not bother reading anything else, because nothing would ever top it. And there's no excuse for how old you are either, cos I'm just 13!

This book is complexly written and with extremely diverse vocabulary - both in english and in the french excerpts within this book. The theme of sorrow is developed and converged from various angles in an elegant portrayal that recurs on several ocassions. The overall result: thought provoking self-diagnoses that leaves the reader inspired (if not over-whelmed) by the author's vivid imagination. The author has delicately intertwined religion, politics, love, vengeance, suspense, sorrow and various other themes in an altogether historic France...simply beautiful. Indeed one of the greatest books ever written.

'Les Miserables' is a wonderful book, and has been enjoyed by many readers worldwide over the years. A book that is at times tragic, at times fun, but never ceases to entertain and move the reader. In the unabridged edition there are very long descriptive passages which can seem a little tedious, but they are definitely worth reading because the better understood they are, the more you can picture the scenes in your imagination, the better you can understand the story. Basically, the story is set in France several centuries ago, around the time of revolution. Valjean, who is released from the chain gang, rises, with help from his friend the Bishop of Digne, to become a socially acceptable character - factory owner and mayor of a town. When one of his employees turn to prostitution to pay for her daughters upbringing she gets into trouble, and dies. Valjean takes in her child, Cosette, and brings her up as his own. She falls in love with a young student, but when revolution breaks out, everyone's lives are changed forever. As well as being an interesting and enjoyable insight into life in France in the time of revolution, 'Les Miserables' is a great story that will entertain all. For those who want to read the story but don't want to tackle the original, which is admittedly a bit lengthy, there are several good abridged versions around. But for maximum reading pleasure I would recommend the full unabridged story, which is a little more satisfactory, even with the lengthy descriptive sections. For those who feel they are too young to feel they could enjoy 'Les Miserables', don't' - I first read and enjoyed it as a mere 13 year old. Full marks to Victor Hugo for this book!

I truly love this book and have read it several times over the years, though I admit it is quite a heavy tale. I find this particular translation to be extremely good and easy to follow, even if Victor Hugo was known to be very biased and to go off on many a tangent.... so, YES this is one heck of a long novel whereas it could have been just as interesting without his incessant political views and elaborations! However, please be aware that this is the book in its original form (albeit translated from the original French language of course) and not one of the many film versions (which vary greatly) or the stage musical version. Enjoy it for what it is - the original story of Jean Valjean, Javert, Fantine, Cossette, Marius and the Thernadiers! Les Miserables is my favourite all-time musical and I have seen it more times than I remember during the past 20 years, but it differs to the novel - which makes reading this epic original story even more interesting in my opinion.

I ordered this book and received a really high quality hard back with a high quality plastic cover - as though it had been prepared for a public library. I won't go into detail regarding the excellence of the Everyman's translation nor review what is arguably (according to Tolstoy) the greatest novel ever written. All I would like to do is to encourage those of you who know the stage musical or movie to read this book and not to be daunted by its size. It is a book that enriches your life and your view of humanity and the world; it is extremely powerful. For those of you who have enjoyed the stage musical, remember that the storyline for the musical is simply the skeleton at best - this book will add flesh and life and make your understanding that much greater, it will answer all of your questions, especially the 'whys'!

This book is amazing! since we're doing the musical at school, i thought it would be a good idea to read the book. Being a massive fan of the musical version of les mis, the book was quite different as to what i was expecting. There is noticeable differences, in the book where many of the characters are explained in more detail, and you get background info on them in the course of the plot. At times the book seemed ever so slightly long-winded, but is possibly just me being younger that most other readers.. but the rest of the book is absolutely mind blowing. There were so many points in the book which made me cry. An Absolute MUST BUY!
