standard andre norton, with the central heroine a misunderstood, lonely and self-doubting young woman, growing slowly into her power, and changing the world around her for the better. andre norton's theme is, in every one of the 70 or so texts of hers i have read, a "coming home", a recognition of the true place, the inheritance, the power, which the protagonist has mislaid/been deprived of...her stories are perfect for sad, lonely, misunderstood, shy and anxious teens...in every world, correct, humane, ethical and moral values will win, and the courageous hero/ine will find a connection, a community, a life of fulfillment...good, cheering stuff...but the dangers and risks are real, this is not sugar-plum land...the hero/ines win through moral commitment and bravery...

This was a really good book, Twilla and Ylon are both strong characters. I enjoyed the way she (Norton) described the castles of forest and underworld. It was good enough for 5 stars by almost any other author's standards. I think the Witch World series topped this, but just barely.

Twilla is a strong character and the story is engrossing. Norton once again takes us into a realm where she weaves her talent and leaves all her fans wanting more!
