This contains articles by twenty European specialists about Spanish cinema from the 1990s up until the present day. The title refers to the increasingly blurred lines between the global and the local in terms of 'national' cinemas, and this is something that is investigated in several of the articles as well as issues such as the recuperation of memory, Madrid as an imaginary space, the questioning of the male 'look', and notions of 'auteur cinema' and 'genre cinema'.
The films examined include: The Red Squirrel (Medem, 1993), Lovers of the Arctic Circle (Medem, 1998), Bad Education (Almodovar, 2004), The Sea Inside (Amenabar, 2004), Te doy mis ojos (Bollain, 2003), El Bola (Manas, 2000), and many others including work by Alex de la Iglesia, Fernando Trueba, David Trueba, David Serrano, Chus Gutierrez, Imanol Uribe, Montxo Armendariz, Agusti Villaronga, Gracia Querejeta, Isabel Coixet, Ray Loriga, and Ken Loach.
An interesting collection.
