I’d heard about Hal’s book “The Miracle Morning” system before, and when Pat Flynn - who I’ve been following with admiration since 2009 - mentioned it I decided I’d better get round to reading it. I recently finished reading the book and I’ve got a lot to say about it, not much of which is positive. In fact I feel a little angry at this guy.

I have to say this was unexpected. Pretty much every personal development book I’ve ever read has at least something to offer. OK, they may not be works of literary genius, but if they’ve got some grains of wisdom in them, I’m cool with that. But although The Miracle Morning does have some useful bits buried within its pages, I’d argue this was stuff is already known about and practiced by millions worldwide. We’re talking the military, artists, religious practitioners and all kinds of people in the creative arts. The potential of early morning work is nothing new.

I mistakenly believed, judging by the amount of 5-star Amazon reviews and glowing universal acclaim, that Hal Elrod had come up with something new and important. Wrong! The Miracle Morning is a masterpiece of marketing over material and hard-sell over substance. Huge amounts of NLP gibberish, self-promotional nonsense and meaningless exhortations bloat around an idea which is actually summed up very easily:

It may be beneficial to get up earlier than normal, think through your plans, do a bit of exercise, then maybe some reading or writing.

Not really revolutionary, is it? OK, let’s get this over with. Unlike the book itself, I’ll try to keep this review brief and to the point. Sorry if it’s oppressive to read, but I do feel this brand of ‘messianic’ personal development has a lot to answer for.

Every morning Hal Elrod wakes up at 5 a.m. in order to witness the sun rising from his own anus.

A good self help book should help you learn skills which assist you to interact better with other people and to develop new skills applicable to your life / job / relationships. A bad self help book sends the reader on an introverted self-indulgent cycle. This book strangely does both.

What is it about life coaches that make them so self-obsessed? I assume because there is a fine line between personal development and self-obsession, between self-awareness and narcissism.

Hal does have a great and inspirational story to tell, and he clearly enjoys the sound of his own voice, and encourages you to do the same, by telling yourself how great you are with personal affirmations and visioning. This is just about bearable, but the real rub is all of Hal's self promotion. Frequent calls to visit his website, to invest in his other material, and to engage him as a life coach for $7,000 dollars per month (I checked his website for that info) Hal says he wants to help people, but the people who really need his help probably earn $7000 dollars per year. ...oh, and, of course, buy his book for a loved one (because they deserve it!) ..ENOUGH ALREADY!!

Here's my nugget of self-help inspiration, grow some self-respect, stop aggressively pushing your wares on people, and start taking an interest in other people more and yourself less. The book would be much more credible without the constant self-promotion.

Worst of all is the bonus material, "the email which will change your life... " Too right it will change your life! If you send it your friends will never talk to you again! ...

Okay, so I'm only on page 67, but felt prompted to write a review because I have rarely, if ever, encountered a book which I hate more than this. Let's start with Hal - an admirable young man, sure; he's overcome bad things and has leveraged that suffering to implore others - the lazy, demotivated and unfulfilled '95%' to seek that which they wish and unshackle themselves from 'mediocrity.' But in doing so, he just comes across as a cocky, glib Yank who at no point attempts to delve into the deeper, darker meaning behind those of us who perhaps fail at life. Stepping inside the book is like stepping inside those dubious 'millionaire mindset' courses, the sort of programmes that Louis Theroux used to turn up to, to politely unmask an alleged guru. All 'we' need is to read his words, get excited, and then do it. It's like a pep talk for morons. It's also badly written - he quotes from Roin Sharma during an introduction, and then stuffs the quote back into the text - as his own prose - a few pages further on. That's poor, selfish writing (or editing) and requires me to think that while being as excited about life as Hal would be a nice thing to be, it would also be good to couple it with some integrity and respect, as well. Phrases, which he expects you to take seriously, such as 'Wake-up Motivation Level,' become 'WUML,' with step four of his magic - brushing your teeth, I kid you not - 'should see you at WUML 3-4.' Here in Britain, I'd wager we'd respond better to a scale around the question, 'How Arsed Am I?' and would, on a normal morning, not leave 'HAAI 2 until we leave work at 6pm.Read more ›
