The definitive Pixies collector's piece. Minotaur is curated by legendary graphic designer, Vaughan Oliver, who in connection with photographer Simon Larbalestier, created the album artwork for all five Pixies' studio albums. Oliver and Larbalestier have teamed up once again on Minotaur, to create their largest single body of Pixies work to date. Includes all five Pixies' studio albums (Come on Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, Bossanova, and Trompe le Monde) in the following formats: 24k gold plated CD's Five - 180 gram Virgin Vinyl LP's cut from the original analog tapes Blu-ray audio mastered for 5.1 surround sound and 2 channel stereo at 24/192 DVD mastered for 5.1 surround sound and 2 channel stereo at 24/96 Also included is the previously unreleased Pixies 1991 live performance from Brixton, on both Blu-ray and DVD, mastered for 5.1 surround sound at 24/192 and 24/96, respectively. All discs are housed in a custom designed folio. In addition to reinterpreting all of the original album covers, Oliver's and Larbalestier's extensive work is featured in a 96-page fine art book, measuring 22" x 14" inches, and an additional 54-page book, measuring 7.75" x 8.25". Also included is a 12" x 19.5" giclee print of the duo's work, and two double-sided fold-out posters measuring 48" x 36." Each copy of the Limited Edition is individually numbered, and hand-signed by every member of the Pixies and Vaughan Oliver. Additionally, at random, 25 of the 3000 Limited Edition sets will include test pressings of the vinyl albums. Housed in an oversized clamshell case and weighing over 25 pounds.

Also (and this is a big issue) I have two Doolittle CD's and no Surfer Rosa CD. I'm sure I saw another reviewer who highlighted the same problem. For a boxset of this magnitude (and cost) I would expect a bit more care an attention to be paid to the contents. I have contacted the manufacturers but they never got back to me.
I received my copy of Minotaur deluxe yesterday, 5 days after Amazons "Guaranteed" next day delivery and today I handed it back over to DHL in the hopes someone at Amazon will have the sense to send the rest of their stock back to Artists In Residence.
The first major disappointment with this box set was of course that nothing has been remastered despite mofi having recently remastered surfer, doolitlle and bossanova to alarming effect. (you really need to hear them if you haven't already, it's like hearing them for the first time again) However I knew this before I ordered.
so I'll just list the faults as I see them.
1. Outer artwork is paper glued to card rather than artwork printed onto card. This meant that on my copy the artwork had bubbled and warped and lifted from the surface.
2. Spine was bashed despite being in the original protective packaging. Obviously this would suggest the packaging is not suitable. No bubble wrap etc..
3. card partition that separates the 2 books was bent and bashed and really not strong enough for the job.
4. All discs were either scratched or scuffed and since I am the first owner then this would seem to mean that the damage was caused at the factory and therefore quite possibly others will also find their discs scuffed. The recessed spaces for the discs are a bad idea anyway because after taking them in and out a few times they are going to get scratched anyway.
5. finally the transfer of the music videos and live gig are awful. If you can imagine a VHS to DVD transfer then you're close. The blu-ray only highlights this further.
This was a nice idea and the amount of content you get is ok but ultimately since the only new thing on here is the live gig and the build quality is poor it's just not worth wasting your money on.
FOR GOD'S SAKE MOFI PLEASE REMASTER PILGRIM AND TROMPE THEN I WON'T HAVE TO COVET MORE RUBBISH RE-ISSUES

I could wax poetic about the virtues of the Pixies. But, if you've read this far, then you probably already know and feel the same. You probably own all their albums. So what are you missing? 5.1 audio mixes, a concert, and a hardback art book residing in ostentatious packaging. The 5.1 mixes give a new dimension to the music you already love, but they're not really mind blowing. They do make a stereo mix seem flat. Then again, maybe I'm just a snob.
So that's the product. It's probably best suited for the most pretentious collectors.
On another note, Amazon originally shipped me a set that had two copies of Surfer Rosa, but no Doolittle. Naturally, I returned it and the process was smooth. My replacement was here before the deficient item had left. I've been using Amazon for about eleven years now and have always experienced excellent customer service no matter where I've been around the globe. I'm also an active duty service member, so some of those locations weren't exactly vacation spots. It just peeves me to read a review where a customer uses this venue negatively review their shopping experience rather than the product. So, thanks Amazon, without you I wouldn't have even known the Minotaur Box Set existed, nor would I have my own. And to whoever got the box with two Doolittle CDs in it, now you know.
