, review of ABNA 2014 submission manuscript

I immediately loved the characterization!! I felt like I knewMinnie...and could completely empathize with her misfortunes and hersilliness. The dynamic between Minnie and her boss was to me veryreminiscent of The Devil Wears Prada. I thoroughly enjoyed it! For fun, light reading, look no further. Ianticipate this book being a great "beach read." Laugh out loud funny!

ABNA 2014 submission excerpt

It was entertaining. It reminded me of something by Anna Maxted or Sophie Kinsella. Great for a beach read.

I love reading. I love books, the feel of a book, the making progress page by page. I wasn't sure about a Kindle. I didn't quite 'get it'. It didn't quite look 'right' to me.

But, I got a Kindle, and I love it. I love the freedom to read whatever and whenever. I can choose from (I feel a list coming on but I'll hold back) non-fiction, novels, short stories... I can choose to match my situation... half-an-hour to spare, an evening with my feet up. I also download items that I wouldn't normally pick up in a bookshop.

And so to the review. As a book in a shop I may well have by-passed 'Minnie', it may not have been on 'my' shelves. But as a download, there it was, and with the cover shouting an obvious San Fran connection, why not give it a go?

I read it, all of it. From beginning to end. I encountered people I liked and people I didn't. There were scenes that made me laugh and scenes that touched me. There were some beautiful lines, beautiful moments. There were parts that brought back happy memories of San Fran, I liked that. And I must confess that along the way I fell in love with Minnie too.

So what is it about? Well, it's about Minnie. It's about getting something wrong and trying to put it right. It's about actions, events and consequences. Do I recommend it? I can't think of any reason not to. However, one person's Paddington is another person's Ulysses. We're all different.

But Helen MacArthur wanted to write it, and she did. I couldn't have done that. So for the moments and the scenes and the ideas and the sheer drive I give it 5 stars. My choice. If you think you'd like to read it... your choice.

I loved the characters in this book, so different it made a welcome change. The storyline flowed in an excellent way so much so that I couldn't put it down! I have also read Four Widows which I enjoyed but I loved this one, I will miss reading about Minnie and wondering what she will say or do next.

I could not help but be sucked in as Minnie Chase tries to put right the unimaginable series of disasters for which she is responsible. Helen MacArthur skillfully creates a fascinating world for her to navigate which makes it impossible to put this book down.

Minnie is a character who I hope will come back to enthrall us again. I am desperate to find out what dreadful mess she has to extract herself from next. I am sure you will be surprised and shocked by her, and love her and the insane journey on which she takes you.

That's spooky-just looked back at my review of her first book and I read it a year ago on pretty much the same dates !! I liked the first one and this one even more. Then why not 5 stars ? The same reason as before-the sloppy mistakes throughout. This lady writes great stories only to not get them proofread or edited properly and it's a real shame.
As before there were dropped speechmarks quite frequently, missing words from sentences like a/his then seemed used in place of seem, 11.45 was mentioned and I was totally baffled as I believe she meant 23.45, then year and not years used, to used in place of the....silly stuff that makes a great difference.
However, it was a great story that kept my interest and again some very funny lines in it as well. I liked the people Minnie made friends of during her story-they were great characters. I like Minnie a great deal, too. She has good values, rare these days.
I'll certainly read the next one by this author. This one didn't have quite as many mistakes as the first one so I'm hoping for third time lucky !!

Helen MacArthur writes a fantastic yarn. The story is original and pulls you in from the first chapter. I really liked th e characters, all individual but with him I connected for their differences. This was true escapism and I couldn't out the boo down. Cannot wait for the next book from this author having read this and Four Widows.....
