There are some excellent colour plates of example IC engines, and the author explains the basics of IC engine design, timing for both two and four stroke cycles, ignition methods and fuel types, even a passing reference to the wankel rotary ! Methods of construction are discussed and the novice is provided with guidance for his/her initial designs. The mathematics is kept to a minimum, so if you want the really heavy theory you will need another book.
I really enjoyed reading this book, and the subject of IC engines has been somewhat demystified. Who knows, I might actually have a go at building one !
I exchanged several letters with Malcolm Stride although we never met. His answers to my various questions and doubts as I began working with building my first internal combustion engines were always very courteous and gave helpful information.
For anybody who is considering building their first or even further model engines this book is the ideal beginning point and fills a very large gap.
I was very saddened to hear of his recent and sudden death but I am sure that he would be pleased at the thought that he may have stimulated interest in the subject which was his lifes interest.
