I disagree with the previous comments, tension really did not become an issue since on such a small scale my crochet would have to be really poor for tension to be an issue. I found this a really useful book with some delightful designs, and although some of them did take quite a lot of patience the end results were worth it.

Hmmm. I was wildly overjoyed when this book arrived & then, by stages, puzzled & annoyed when I looked more closely. Published by the "Guild of Master Craftsman" sounded like the ultimate commendation but it is not.

Whereas this book does have a great number of patterns in it, the questions of tension & size of the finished article are dismissed by the author with the phrase "On a such a small scale tension is not really a problem ..." In my opinion, there is not much of the craftsperson in that statement.

Why do both the author & publisher assume that the book will only be used by those who actually OWN the dolls? The coincidence of crochet ability & enthusiasm for 1/12 scale dolls & dolls' houses must be quite low. Yet time & again the text simply advises - try it on the doll & adjust to fit. Coupled with the fact that finished size is not mentioned, this becomes at best "1/12 Scale Crochet for Doll Owners". It is true, as the author says, that the dolls will vary in their proportions & actual sizes but this doesn't excuse the complete absence of information on finished project size or stitch tension.

Some of the dresses are quite complex & no standard book on crochet would publish a comparable pattern without tension. Imagine trying to crochet a pair of gloves without knowing the tension! Not to produce such advice is lazy, to say the least. I am no novice to crochet & my tension is usually correct but that is not true for everyone & I still ALWAYS check.

As for the patterns - well, the garment shapes are useful. Some of the dress patterns are delightful. However, there is a great dependence on double crochet, resulting in something of an excess of rather crude & stiff garments of a somewhat rustic appearance.
