Two special episodes from the popular televisioncomedy-drama centring around dodgy London entrepreneur Arthur Daley (George Cole) and his 'minder', former boxer Terry McCann (Dennis Waterman). The first is an 'Early Years' special with Arthur and Terry reminiscing and footage compiled from the first 3 series. Whilst in 'Around the Corner' Terry has to rescue Arthur who, yet again, has got into a spot of bother.
First appearing on our screens in late 1979, Minder was a vehicle for ex-Sweeney sidekick Denis Waterman, but its lasting contribution to TV culture was rehabilitating George Cole, whose lovable but unscrupulous "entrepreneur" (an older version of the spiv he portrayed in the St Trinian's films) mockingly reflected the values of 1980s Thatcherite Britain. The series is fondly set in a rough demimonde of small-time gangsters and ageing dolly birds, and against a backdrop of seedy London pubs and dubious business dealings. Waterman plays Terry McCann, ex-boxer and ex-con trying to stick to the straight and narrow, but persuaded against his better judgement to become involved in murky capers set up by his employer, "Arfur", who regularly sublets him to dodgy associates of his. In this, the first series, Arthur Daley is more in control, not quite the figure of fun he would later become. In the opening episode, for instance, as Terry is held hostage by wannabe black militants in a launderette, Arthur is negotiating his "exclusive" story to a tabloid. Though aspects of these episodes are a little creaky and dated--Terry's flares especially--the interplay between the too softhearted hard man Terry and his dapper but slippery boss is both priceless and timeless.

The stories are well put togther, the characters are amusing and the dialogue can be very pithy. We are glad we got this excellent value boxed set.
While I agree with other reviews that the 'Ray' episodes weren't quite in the same league as the 'Terry' ones, the makers (and perhaps George Cole himself) knew when it was time to quit, so Minder never became as soppy as the later Fools & Horses.
I'm now never stuck for entertainment when there's nothing decent to watch on the electric fishtank.
I don’t think this show was ever intended to be a comedy, but the outrageous wheeling and dealing antics of Arthur – his dialogue laden with non-stop cockney rhyming slang – leaves me in fits of laughter.
I was feeling quite down with work and life in general. I now look forward to sitting down at night and enjoying an episode from this timeless classic that has given me a real lift.
This box set is worth every penny and I strongly recommend!
NB: Don’t be in two minders’ and stand there holding the folding . . . part with those readies now . . . could be the best wedge you’ve parted with in yonks!
Great television and a pleasure to watch.
