So a potted historical view of ACR. Once Donald Johnson came on board, the good ship ACR become the industrial funkateers we all love. The 1980-82 recordings is all Manchester grey, New York funk, African drumming. As they progressed and took in latin percussion for Force/I'd Like To See You Again. ACR lost it a bit in 1983 (especially with an awful cover of Don't you Worry About A Thing). Things came back for the 1984-86 recordings (Wild Party/Life's A Scream) managed to combine their underground sound with the mainstream and should have been having hits now. This was not to be and by 1989 the Good Together album (on a major label) sucked ACR dry of any originality. Luckily the MCR album that rewired some of the '89 recordings into house anthems worked an absolute treat.

Thanks to Rob Gretton's label and getting them back to putting the funk into punk and both Up In Downsville & Change Station reflect this. After so many years they finally went into the studio and A Mind Made Up is ACR being influenced by ACR!

Taking their early echoing basslines and jagged guitars and putting them over some amazing percussion, A Mind Made Up show that after all these years they possess a creative drive. A classic album that deserves to be heard.

Now it's 2014 and still no follow up.... C'mon on ACR!

Also recommended is Jez Kerr's Numb Mouth Eat Waste. Taking it's root in early MCR post punk.

Is this ACR's best effort? It could well be. It's an amalgamation of all their best attributes and they are even so bold as to sample themselves and also revisit an old track to update it. The title track is incredible.

It's respectfully impressive and quietly reassuring that ACR are still going after all these years. Mind Made Up is not immediately apparent at first as it does not jump out and grab you. It takes several listenings to get tuned in, and it requires some adjusting to. It is typically ACR, the songs being both commercial and non-commercial at the same time, hence that elusive hit. Highlights are the strength and skill of the drums, bass and guitar, underpinning all the songs. Having said that, this collection has multiple layers, (noticed when the batteries ran low and it all slowed down; for some bizarre reason, listened to this on a Sony Walkman) which when added to the aforementioned, creates a holistic piece, referencing past styles but looking to the future. It's fresh, happening and timelessly elegant.

I Feel Light with its Curtis-esque vocals is the auditory equivalent to Howard Hodgkin's `Rain'. Down, Down, Down is funky through and through. Everything Is Good is the best track with the best intro, the best drums, bass and guitar, a nostalgic New Order type synth at the beginning only, two repeats of unnecessary swearing and lots of other cool bits and pieces later on. Way to Escape has the funkiest guitar, and some vocals that require a good night's sleep. Rialto 2006, shows just what a great voice Denise Johnson has got, and wouldn't be out of place in a Bond movie (as wouldn't Mind Made Up) with it's dour minor key `music traces, my heart falling' brass riff throughout. The title track succeeds with spacey samples, Doobie Brothers guitar, funky bass and more funky bass. Teri (should it be called Teri?) is an uplifting nod to the ACR of the 80s with a very catchy keyboard and a near anthemic chorus.
