This compilation is a very good snapshot of the mod scene in the late seventies early eighties it is very well produced and you would think these tracks were recorded yesterday. This brings back memories of seeing a school friends band the Alljacks above the bitter end in Romford and the alldayers at ilford palis. Unfortunately I didn't get to ser all of the bands in this compilation

Cherry Red Records have been bringing out some amazing box sets over the past year. I have already purchased the Todd Rundgren BBC box set and looking forward to purchasing Noise Candy by Bill (Be-Bop Deluxe) Nelson soon. The Rundgren box set is lavish and put together rather splendidly. In contrast, Millions Like Us only adds to the rooster.

This box set is beautifully packaged with a detailed booklet with lots of information about each release featured in it. The box set is like a small hardback book with lovely discs enclosed which brings me to the music. Firstly, nearly all of this music is new to me apart from New Hearts, Secret Affair, The Merton Parkas, The Chords and Purple Hearts songs. Other recordings featured simply are energetic and exciting to these ears. But why is that? Well it can't be cause I'm a mod and it's not cause I want to be, but the music has that punk/new wave element fused with sixties stylings in places. The nearest comparison I can make is power pop and I'm a lover of that genre.

Anyway, this box set is a must for any lover of biting commercial music with a rough edge. The songs are catchy as hell and the music has been remastered. Sure there are rough patches here and there but this music is a blast from the past, so it's expected. But don't let that put you off. This is the raw deal and it is admirable. Thank you Cherry Red Recordings for unveiling. Enjoy.

I thought this would be a re-packaged version of the "This Is Mod Volumes 1 - 6" series of CDs released some years ago. It has a lot of the songs on it that were on the those CDs but also some that weren't. Unfortunately, I have to question the inclusion of a couple of bands on this compilation - their links to the Mod Revival being tenuous to say the least. The Q-Tips may have been around at the time of the revival but were not a Mod Band, soulful as they were.

That said, it's great that the music of the Mod Revival is getting another airing and the songs on here are a brilliant cross section of what I listened to then and still listen to now. I, and I'm sure everyone else of a Mod persuasion, could go on forever about the songs that should have been included on this compilation (This Working Way by The Way Out immediately springs to mind - one of the best songs of the 80's revival) but let's be grateful for what we have here - pure gold.

This all brings back great memories of being one of a handful of Mods keeping the faith in Sunderland during that time.

Buy this compilation and keep the flame burning.

This is a great collection of lost tunes, it will not be for everyone who has got into the indie / mod scene in more recent times but for anyone who caught this scene first time around it will be a good acquisition. I was just getting into music at this time, my first gig was The Truth at The Winter Gardens in Cleethorpes and I was hooked immediately, this collection brings back great memories of the time. I would say I knew around a third of the tunes by name when first looking at the track list but after listening there were quite a few more that were familiar. the set itself is beautifully presented in a nice box will a booklet full of facts about the time, the bands and the tracks set out in roughly the chronological order that the were released. Not everyone's cup of te but a really nice 'mod item' that collectors of this era will cherish.

I was a 14 year old mod revivalist back in 1980. Dipped in and out of it for years, had a couple of scooters went to rallies and even saw the prisoners around 86. That said I probably knew around only a dozen tracks from the album.
I was a bit worried that a lot of the 1979 tracks would sound to punky. Which isn't a problem but it doesn't. A lot of it still sounds great today. There are some naff tracks but on an album with a 100 tracks on that's no surprise. Some of it brought a nostalgic tear to the eye.
Overall package looks great. It looks like a small book. If you like mod all be it revival power pop or just the genre in general this is for you.

A brilliant box set with not just the big players on here ie secret affair, purple hearts, the chords but some of my favourites from that era ie Qtips, Nine below Zero, the Truth a lot of very good one off singles from bands that appeared albeit briefly but left some great music.
Get out the clarks desert boots, the boating blazer, the skin tight levis and enjoy, you will not buy (or hear ) a better compilation this year !

Not been any releases like this since the very rare This is mod collection, all the mod revival bands are here, chords, squire, s affair, lambrettas , p hearts, circles, and many many more, if this doesn't start another CD mod revival,revival (more mod cds released)will wait and see, once a MOD always a MOD

Having been in the middle of this revival via my Empty Hours fanzine this is a fantastic collection of memories both good and bad....some artists will be known because they flirted with the charts from time to time, most though will be unknown unless you were into the scene during these years.....I would have liked to have seen some other bands featured who were as good if not better than some of the one's chosen but where the hell do you start when compiling something like this?
