Product Description

Romantic comedy starring Sophia Loren and Peter Sellers. Spoilt heiress Epifania Parerga (Loren) can have anything she wants - all she has to do is buy it. However, what she really wants is a husband, and specifically Indian doctor Ahmed el Kabir (Sellers) whose life work is to heal the poor and needy. He falls in love with her, but does not want to be bought, and so the pair set endurance tests for one another in order to be sure of the other's true feelings.

Best film of a Bernard Shaw play since Pygmalion...a delight. --Evening Standard --This text refers to an alternate DVD edition.

I have loved this film since the first time I saw it on TV and had made a devotion to buy it but could not find on shops and I am really happy I have it on DVD at last. It did not take to long before bit arrived I was so pleased it did not take long to get it. So I am very happy with this DVD and with the seller.

Is this film a romance or a comedy? Well both really. A nice change to see Peter Sellers toning down is physically idiotic chaos to give a straight performance. His voice this time is Indian, and a fittingly impressive one too! The transfer to DVD is impressive too for a 1960 film, the colour is also enriched compared to the video release some years back. Sophia Loren looks stunning too!

I remember seeing this on the tv as a child, and bought it to see in widescreen with Peter Sellers and Sophia Loren. The film is just as I remember it.

BUT - Maybe it is just my disc, but I think Prism Leisure have a cheek putting this out for sale if it is not, the quality on my disc is dire, it's a pretty poor transfer of a widescreen picture on to the old 4:3 format with black bars top and bottom, now I have good DVDs with the transfer done this way. But here the picture quality is really poor, the colours faded and dull giving it a grubby unwashed look. If I had not bought it for [...]I would have taken it back.

I looked forward to this film with great anticipation, and was on the whole let down. Some films are timeless, others, like this just do not age well. The story is very weak, (as are the supporting characters) and the script dated and lacking in laughs. Peter Sellers is far from his best, playing a watered down version of the character he portrays in the hilarious "The Party." Apparently his relationship with Sophia Loren began while filming this, so I expected lots of on screen chemistry. There are glimpses of this but the actors have very little to work with due to the affore mentioned poor script. I keep the film in my collection as a Peter Sellers fan, otherwise it would be in the bin.

Peter Sellers is an Indian doctor, very earnest and funny in a subtle way (not like Sellers in The Party). But Peter Sellers, although a genius, is not the star of this film. Sophia Loren steals the show as the spoilt millionairess who thinks she can buy everyone and everything. Can she buy Peter Sellers? Amazingly he resists her charms! Sophia jumps in the Thames, buys him a clinic, dresses in the most lavish and revealing costumes, but the poor Indian doctor holds out - well until the end of course!

It's an amusing and charming film. If you are a fan of Sophia Loren you will love this film. She is at her most glamorous and alluring.

Unfortunately this is the same terrible low quality print that I have bought before with different covers... several times! There is no decent DVD of this film, so don't be fooled! Its almost unwatchable. Not even anamorphic. Ridiculous waste.

This movie, directed by Vittorio De Sika, is based on Bernard Shaw play "The Millionairess".
But very little from the original play brilliance, wittiness and energy survived. The original plot was changed enormously in order to make it more "movie-like" and add some "movie-action".
The result is very disappointing - Sophia Loren looks unconvicing and her talent is waisted. Peter Sellers can not
resque the silly script.
If you like films of Vittorio De Sika starring Sophia Loren turn to such great movies as "Yesterday Today and Tomorrow" or "Marriage Itailan Style" and forget about "The Millionaress".
The DVD itself (released by Waterfall home entertainment)
has no any special features , even direct scene access is missing.
