About the Author

Renée Norman was the second of two daughters born to Engel Hevenor, a highly regarded surgeon, and Clementine Smith Hevenor, a professional harpist, who chaired a number of charities as Renée was growing up. Renée was born and raised in Westchester County, New York. The family home was on the first hole of Winged Foot Golf Club. Renée was afforded the opportunity to attend excellent schools and spend her summers sailing and swimming. When Renée was eleven years old, her mother was diagnosed with cancer. This was at a time when there was no “pain management,” no dietary supplements and no hospice care available. Renée says her mother underwent “barbaric” cancer treatments then was sent home to live out her days. Because her father continued his surgical practice and her sister was at college during this time, Renée spent hours alone with her mother, caring for her as best she could, and she gained a sensitivity to those suffering from a terminal illness. By the time Renée was fourteen, her mother had died. After graduating from her high school, Holy Child in Rye, NY, Renée attended American University in Washington, D.C., graduating with majors in International Business and Finance and minors in French and Spanish. By the age of twenty-two, she had received a Masters of International Management and Finance, with a minor in French, Spanish, and Asian studies. She then started her career in Citibank’s International Private Banking division. She was then asked to be on Citibank’s national expansion team. Eventually, Chemical Bank recruited Renée to work in their retail banking network at a time it needed restructuring. Renée married Chris Norman in 1986 and the couple moved to Richmond, Virginia in 1989. They had two children, Charlie and Clemie. On October 5, 2007, the day before his fiftieth birthday, Chris was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease. He lived for thirteen months under Renée’s loving, constant care. It was this experience that prompted Renée to write this book. As she tended to her husband, she realized there was no road map for caregivers, no how-to. This book is the result of meticulous note-taking during her husband’s illness. Today, Renée lives in Richmond with Charlie and Clemie, and their three therapy dogs, Linus, Bentley and Louie.
