Product description

Product Description

Considered by many to be Martha's finest album so far, 'Of Milkmaids And Architects' explores love, family and the present social and political climate whilst offering escapism and hope. To listen to this album is to be taken away for an hour through multi-instrumental layers, stripped back and raw traditional folk songs, touches of the avant garde and honest and considered songwriting by one of this coutry's leading underground folk lights. "I have tried to explore what folk music is with this album, through tradition, love, politics and a bit of experimentation" - special feature = short film attatched to the office song "Artificial" - so run across those office tables! UK appearances with her band The Woods.

If you get the chance to see Martha and the Woods live then GO GO GO! On first listen i thought the CD was a 'good' album, nice songs, easy listening, just well.... nice!

How wrong could i be? Very (is the answer)

I believe Martha Tilston and the Woods have created something truely special with this album, listening to it at various points when i'm happy/tired/stressed or even upset i have been able to take something... i don't know just SOMETHING from listening to her sing. I don't want to get all airy-fairy about it but this is a MAGICAL album - The first song (winter flowers) setting you up for an enchanting experience.

Polly Vaughan - Marthas twisted version of the traditional folk song is a a dark, eerie track which drags you further into the 'story' on each listen.

One thing i think IS missing from the album is Martha - IN PERSON!! May sound absurd but when you see her live and she tells you the inspiration for the song she is about to play - you have already melted. Songs that make Sophie fizz - A song about her childhood, remembering how excited her sister got over songs she heard. Hearing Martha explain this to you made you smile. The album isn't just about family, there are a few like the Phenomenal Architect or the sweet but sad song - Milkmaid.

It is however on songs like Good World (The response to the idea our world is heading for total collapse) or Artificial *WATCH THE VIDEO MASTERPIECE FOR THIS TRACK* that make you sit in awe at just how much talent this young lady and band have. JUST BUY IT!

I'm SO delighted to have discovered this artist! This CD is the perfect remedy to a bad day at work. It makes you want to embrace the autumn! Her voice is so mesmerisingly beautiful, and the songs so well composed, that it will take three listens before you notice how meaningful and subtly witty her lyrics are. Her tales of modern day life are rooted in the folk tradition, and she applies a wonderful contemporary treatment to a couple of traditional folk songs. The musicianship is superb throughout, as is the production. There is not a dull song on this CD! If you can imagine Beth Orton, Katheryn Williams and Natalie Merchant crossed with Kate Rusby, Pentangle, Melanie and Sandy Denny, you are getting somewhere close to imagining her sound. With traditional, at times latin sounding, percussion, together with mandolin, guitars, bouzouki, violin, flute, piano, cello and bass and a smattering of delay effects there is enough variety to keep things interesting, whilst never losing the laid back, but at times quite groovey, feel to the album. It's impossible to play one track without wanting to hear the rest of the CD. She is surely destined for greatness and it will be a crime if she is not one of next years Mercury Music Prize nominees!

I was fortunate enough to see Martha perform at Priddy folk festival this year, and as a result had to "get more". this album never tires, Martha has the ability to make her songs so personal, This album flows between tracks and provides a delicate blend of contemporary folk songs that grow with each listening, clever lyrics that draw you into each song. All the tracks are good without exception "Winter flowers""The music of the moon"and "Milk maid" catch you first then "Sophie" gives an insight into Marthas background of yesterday and growing up,If you like a clear, uncluttered, and clever music look no further.

I absolutley loved Martha's previous album (Bimbling), and was in danger of over-playing it, so was delighted to buy her new one. It is wonderful, it relates to her family and growing up, and so is very personal. I think that's what makes each song so heart-fealt and inspirational.

I have seen Martha play live many times now, and would reccomend it highly. People I've taken for the first time have all left saying they were smiling for days. Definately gives you the feel good factor.

I discovered Martha almost by accident at PortFairy Folk Festival this year and was entranced by her!! It took a while but I tracked down this album and "Bimbling" and am so glad I did!!
It is so good to hear a Contemporary Traditional Folkie who writes and sings this good ( and is ably supported by her band )!!
Cheers!!!

Martha is awesome. Her songs scratch itches, make you laugh, make you cry, make you realise that you are not the only one on the planet with issues :) I love her uncompromising optimism in the face of governmental spin. And I am running with her to the sea....
