My principal reason for purchasing this CD was that Poulenc’s Les Biches and also Milhaud’s Le Bœuf sur le Toit were featured on it – then I saw that Ibert’s Divertissement was also included so that clinched it. And I wasn’t disappointed – I hadn’t heard Ibert’s piece for some time and I thoroughly enjoyed it, together with his crashing ‘Finale’, as I did the other two works. But this was the first time I’d heard Milhaud’s ‘La Création du Monde’ and I have to admit, I didn’t care for it, at all. There you are, it’s all a matter of taste – but the rest of the CD couldn’t be faulted and the always excellent Ulster Orchestra was superbly conducted by Yan Pascal Tortelier.

Listening to a few seconds of Classic FM the other day, I heard a tune which I half recognised but couldn't place. It was the final movement of Les Biches by Francois Poulenc. I wanted to hear the rest of the work, so searched on Amazon and came up with this compilation at a very good price played by reputable people on a much-acclaimed label.
It happens that all four pieces (total 68 minutes) are of French origin, though their styles are so different (and sometimes what you might call "wacky") that they might have come from almost anywhere: for example, Le Boeuf sur le Toit has a distinctly Latin-American flavour thanks to its recurring motif.
They are all pieces for the stage, mostly ballet, written in 1920, 1923, 1924, and 1930. They are very listenable, and though not the greatest of the classical repertoire, they will provide a bit of light (even comic) relief to a serious music diet (which I tend to be on most of the time). Even Milhaud's "La Creation du Monde" though having such a grandiose title, is a jazzy romp and not much more.
Recording quality is first class: clear and expansive. Enough said.

A good cross section of 1920's French Music - a mix of all the different styles that Les Six were being influenced by. Divertissement has always been a favorite and I didn't have a digital version so the price of mp3 version was worth while.

the members of Les six are reliable for providing good melodies and being a little off the beaten track, particularly Jaques Ibert and his good humour.
