I read the story with great interest, the author has obviously done her research because the descriptions of the people, the time and the customs were very detailed. The story moves swiftly and I quickly found myself rooting for Maggie, who transforms from a confused and somewhat weak person into a strong powerful woman. This story has 24 short pithy chapters, which I personally prefer since I often read "on the go". The formatting of the Kindle version is very good and seemed to have been well thought out.
This book has something for everyone, adventure, romance, and a great pace. I highly recommend it, and I look forward to more work from this author.
The story is about a woman called Maggie who is partly native American, and who leaves her abusive partner to return to her grandmother's lands for a period of solace and self-reflection. During a canoe ride, she is mysteriously transported back in time to the 1600s; a harsh environment full of strangers and tribal warfare.
Pat Cher, in my opinion, weaves a great tale here. I can't say that her book is wildly exciting and perhaps (not yet) worthy of a especial book award, but her novel has a solid, well-developed plot, and is very enjoyable to read. I thought this book was particularly good because of the way she gradually develops the story and her detailed insight into how life was like back in earlier Canadian times is quite remarkable. I really enjoyed it! The characters are all believable, and full of human frailties as true people can be. I nearly wept a few times at several passages in the book.
And now, I am left with the feeling that I want to read more from this author. Despite its gentle pace, I finished the book too quickly for my liking. I just hope she writes other novels like this. Congratulations to Pat Cher on a really good novel!
