Inferior box set case...discs keep popping out and will scratch!

Firstly, this is not a review about the films. This review is about the box set case, that’s why it is one star. If my review was about Mike Leigh’s films this would be a five star review. I received this box set today, I could already hear the rattling and thought please no. This set was the very last one Amazon stocked themselves. When I opened the box set four dvds fell out onto my lap. Three thankfully were fine, one had multiple scratches including a very deep one. I was contacting Amazon disappointed that I knew I would have to have a refund, nowhere else was selling as cheap so I was gutted. Then my other half said she would watch the scratched disc later just in case it would play. Thanks girl, it played fine, I now get to keep my box set. But whatever buffoon came up with the idea to package the dvds this way practically disc on disc has horse manure for brains. Every time you will try to watch your cherished box set you run the risk of scratching the disc taking it out and putting it back. They also don’t clip in properly and keep on popping out off the stupid clips that do not hold them in. This is not a cheap box set, it is worth it for the films, not the case. For this amount off money £35, the customer is entitled to have much better. It would not have taken a genius to have the discs in individual slim cases. This would keep the discs in mint condition, after all it is a collectors set. But too many companies like to penny pinch and only worry about maximum profit. My Sweeney collection box set also turned up today, different style box set case but again inferior quality and loose discs upon opening. So, this is just a warning to any future purchasers that you very probably, almost certainly will at some stage have to reinvest in buying this box set again in the future. Maybe when someone comes up with a better idea on how to preserve the customers collection I will give a five star review...but I should have been happy in knowing this set would outlast me!

Love the films but need help from seller

The films are amazing- I love Mike Leigh’s work and it feels good to own such a lovely box set! However, I was a little upset that the disc for 'Career Girls' appears faulty as the film freezes and skips the last 20 minutes. Checked the disc and it has a few tiny scratches but it’s the first time I’ve ever taken it out of its case and I doubt scratches that small could cause 20 minutes of damage. I think it's a fault of the disc but there's no option to contact anyone about it to request a new one- there's only the option to send the entire boxset back! Can someone please contact me about this so I can sort it? This is the only way I can find how!

fine apart from the packaging

If, like me, you are one of these people who likes to watch the DVDs before you then give them to someone else as a present then you'll probably want to choose a different box set. The packaging seems to be purposely designed to self-destruct the first time you use it, little plastic tabs inside that case fall off when as you pull the disks out. Totally pathetic because the eleven DVDs will then rattle around inside the case forever more because they can no longer be secured.

Am I bothered? Not really, these are great films and it's nice to have them as part of my CD collection even though it's not quite what I intended - I'll need to find my sister another birthday present...

THE PACKAGING:
I really dislike the package design for this product. Each time I remove a disk, I run the risk of damaging the DVD. The 'Career Girls' DVD is ruined as a result of the design. So be careful!

THE FILMS:
All the essential Mike Leigh cinema films are here. Personal faves being 'Meantime' (actually a TV film). 'Naked', 'High Hope's, 'All or Nothing',and 'Vera Drake'.
As for 'Life is Sweet', 'Career Girls' 'Topsy-Turvy' and 'Bleak Moments', they don't really do it for me.

I tend to have a mostly love-hate relationship with Leigh's work, and I find his 'process' to be successful only half of the time, but when it works it is fantastic, but when it doesn't, the films just come across as being wanky actor exercises that are probably more entertaining to themselves more than anything.

Welcome reissue for Mike Leigh box set

I've been a fan of Mike Leigh since seeing Abigail's Party in 1977 on BBC1 and although I bought the box set of his TV work I missed out getting this box set of his feature films on its original release.in 2008. I'm pleased that the latter has now been reissued and ordered it immediately that I realised it had been re-issued.

I'm looking forward to re-watching some of the most vital British films ever made as well as seeing some of these works for the first time as they passed me by on their initial individual release.

My particular favourite Mike Leigh film is High Hopes and that'll be the one I turn to first.

There are are at least three films by Leigh that were made after this box first appeared including last year's acclaimed Mr Turner and now I've got this box I think I'll treat myself to getting the more recent films too.
