Product description

Product Description

Pickwick is proud to release eleven of the most famous Gilbert & Sullivan operas recorded by the world famous D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. Whilst the original operas were performed at the Savoy Theatre in London towards the end of the 19th century, it was invariably not until the 1920s that the company began recording. It was the following decade that saw the most notable recordings undertaken, a period when Martyn Green was the company's principal comedian between 1934 and 1951 with a gap between the Second World War. There are ten double CD packages - the only missing operas are Thespis (which was performed but never published and is therefore lost), Utopia Limited and The Grand Duke, with the latter two relative failures compared with earlier successes and therefore not recorded as often as the greater works. By way of a bonus, however, Trial By Jury, a one-act opera that marked the arrival of Gilbert & Sullivan, has been included in this collection. The cover to each of the CD s is based on the original programme issued in the 19th century. Inside the four page booklet is a brief synopsis of each work together with the full cast list. These include Darrell Fancourt, Derek Oldham, Martyn Green, Sydney Granville, Leslie Rands and Radley Flynn.

I bought this CD for my father and it's very disappointing. I don't know if it's the original recording or its transfer to CD, but the sound is muted and dull. It doesn't scintillate or engage the listener at all. It is necessary to turn the volume right up to hear it, although my father, who loves The Mikado, can't be bothered to listen to it! Not recommended, unless you particularly want to own this 1936 version with the old D'Oyly Carte stars.

I was really looking forward to this CD as i iused to go to the theatre to see these singers perform. But the sound quality was really poor and I am now faced with buying another copy by someone else!!
Not good value

I must agree with the other two reviews. This CD has a very poor sound quality and is not good value for the money. Furthermore, the songs are not seperated(CD1 has three "tracks" and CD2 has two). This obviously makes going to a particular song very difficult. Despite this being the cheapest Mikado in the Amazon range that I could see, it is not good value. Lesson to self: you get what you pay for.

This recording appears to be made from a prewar production. Having seen many of the artistes, including the incomparable Martyn Greene, in the 1951 Savoy revival season, and many subsequent performances, this recording is a travesty; I am surprised that Bridget allowed it to be released. Any newcomer to G & S would be put off for life on the basis of this sorry effort

I was disappointed that this CD is not divided into single tracks. Each of the 2 acts is in 2 sections. I purchased this so I could practice the music for the ladies chorus. I cant pick out the particular numbers I need without listening to the whole of the CD - this is a drag when the ladies in this production have very little to sing!
