Review

Just when you thought the brilliant Giles Kristian had... the Viking crown for good, along comes another fine contender for the throne... Engrossing, spellbinding, A Mighty Dawn is exactly that. -- Jon Wise Brun has a knack for describing combat... Very much in the vein of Bernard Cornwell's Warrior Chronicles, a warrior's battles are never done, at least, not whilst he still possesses the strength to swing his sword. -- Bookbag [The first of a] very fine historical, fantasy series -- Nudge A truly impressive debut that hints at a much larger story still left to be told. This novel has the potential to be an epic tale to rival the sagas of the ages. -- The Eloquent Page Weaving together history, fantasy and myth like the Norns twining the threads of fate in A Mighty Dawn, Brun has created an excellent debut and a top quality read. -- The Tattooed Book Geek

Book Description

A gripping and brilliantly realized debut epic adventure set in eighth-century Denmark. This is the beginning of an ambitious new series in the vein of George R.R. Martin's A Game of Thrones.

The opening salvo in a new epic series from Theodore Brun. For lovers of fiction that takes the reader into a world where history, myth and imagination converge, this is something to savour on many levels.
With echoes of Beowulf, Shakespeare, Wagner, and Tolkien, the carefully constructed characters and their individual stories are woven together in a kaleidoscope of drama, action, tragedy and redemption. All of this is set against a rich knowledge of the historical and archeological background of early 8th century Scandinavia. The story brings to life a time during the Dark Ages when ancient and emerging cultures were colliding. Much of the context may be new and unfamiliar, but it remains completely compelling as we are bound to the fates of Erlan and Lilla and where they will take us.
If you like a story written with the pace and intricacy of George RR Martin, the elegance and depth of Steinbeck, and the imagination and reverence of CS Lewis, then read this book. A cracking debut.

This book plunged me into its world from the first page and didn't let me go for a moment, every human emotion called upon as I journeyed with the lead character, Hakan, from boyhood to adulthood. A painful but exhilarating journey with genuinely shocking plot twists (and I can usually see them coming). The world - 8th Century Norse - is evocatively detailed, the smells and sounds jumped off the page. The pictures of the home Hakan left behind, the wilderness he travelled through to the new Kingdom he serves came alive in my mind. I literally couldn't wait to get back into it each night - today's world rather dull by comparison. The quality and breadth of the characters and the wholeness of the story are what will make this book appealing - yes there are great and desperate battle scenes, revenge taken and blood spilled, but love, friendship, loss and redemption are in there in equal measure. There are powerful female characters in this book too which I enjoyed a lot. But above all, it is the love I grew for the lead character Hakan that I will remember. He has been brilliantly realised and although a painful place to be, I really got inside his head, and he didn't let me rest for a minute. This is a truly brilliant book. I can't wait for the next one to come out.

A very gripping and well written story. Some fantastic scenes throughout the book that really captivate you into the era of the Nordic dark ages. The balance of intense and disturbing descriptions is broken by the vivid and lighter hearted dialogues.
The story becomes increasingly mysterious and mythical and leaves you with plenty of desire to want to know where Hakan will end up....
Next book please....

I was completely captivated by the worlds and the characters in this book from the start. The writing is so visual I could really imagine the landscapes; the characters so well depicted you are truly inside their heads. Took me less than a week to read, now I'm lost without it and waiting impatiently for the next instalment!

A great story - brilliant characters, mystery and wonderful detail of Norse mythology. As the first book in the series, a whole new world has been opened up and I can't wait to see what continues as the tale unfolds.
