Epic and magical, Midnight s Children is the long awaited film of the Booker Prize winning novel that celebrates India in all its glory. At the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947, as India proclaims independence from Great Britain, two newborn babies are switched by a nurse in a Bombay hospital. Saleem Sinai, the illegitimate son of a poor woman, and Shiva, the offspring of a wealthy couple, are fated to live the destiny meant for each other. Their lives become mysteriously intertwined and are inextricably linked to India s whirlwind journey of triumphs and disasters.

This film is special. So, separately for the different medium, is the book. See the film; read the book. Be inspired by both.
Thank you Mr Rushdie-gi.
The setting is the partition of the Old India into India, Pakistan and eventually Bangladesh.
The story concerns a family afflicted by these events in their everyday life.
I was captivated by the story and was sad when it ended.
Superbly shot, sumptuous throughout and well acted,it is a must for anyone with an interest in India.
For me,it is better as a film about India than a film about Anglo-India than The Jewel in the Crown,A Passage to India,The Far Pavilions et al,being wider in it's scope and ambition, and less pompous and self-righteous than Gandhi.
The mix of history and fantasy can confuse, and the film is not short. It is a shame that because India has still to solve it;s problems that the film is neither Indian made and financed nor Indian filmed.
Only downside is the narration, both irritating and patronising.
If this is your thing,Monsoon WeddingMonsoon Wedding [DVD] is also worthwhile.

This is very good film quite dark at times and deep, I would recommend this to anybody but do not expect a typical singing dancing Bollywood filmPublished 6 months ago by wanderer
