Review

One of the strongest voices in crime fiction. "Seattle Times" Dana Stabenow's best book. "Boston Globe" Every time I think Dana Stabenow has gotten as good as she can get, she comes up with something better. "Washington Times""

About the Author

Dana Stabenow was born in Anchorage and raised on a 75-foot fish tender in the Gulf of Alaska. She knew there was a warmer, drier job out there somewhere and found it in writing. Her first crime fiction novel, A Cold Day for Murder, won an Edgar award. Her first thriller, Blindfold Game, hit the New York Times bestseller list.

Midnight Come Again (Kate Shugak Mysteries)
Got this in ebook form for my kindle. An easy read. At the end of book 9 in the Shugak series, I decided to call it a day and read a different series. However, the end of book 9 was so stunning and left me quite numb that I just had to find out what happened to Kate after the disastrous trip into the mountains.
I felt I was left hanging on the edge; unfinished business. I couldn't walk away from Kate without finding out what happened to her. Midnight Come Again answered the compelling question. The book describes the gradual 'thawing out' of Kate after she had been so badly traumatised by the events of Hunter's Moon. Thanks to Chopper Jim's investigations and Kate's unwilling (at first) involvement in solving another Alaskan mystery, I finished the book satisfied that Kate was 'back in business' as a petulant and ferociously loyal native Alaskan who suddenly had a teenager as a member of her family. Against all odds, I shall return to The Park to see what happens to Kate in the next book. I have loved the historical and cultural setting of the Shugak mysteries.

With 20 books in this series, I can not repeat myself every time when reviewing each novel. Suffice it to say that I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys reading and who loves to travel to distant lands in their heads This series is set in Alaska which already places it in an unusual and dramatic setting. The stories stand alone, but are best read in sequence. The author freely admits to occasional inconsistencies and these in no way detract from the storylines. I recommend this series.

I am a fan of Dana Stabenow so slightly biased for content. From start to finish It made me laugh, scowl, cry and all the other emotions a person feels when getting involved in a story. I have never been to Alaska but this large wilderness with its resourceful remote communities take me to another world. I love the characters, especially mutt, although sometimes predictable). I hope Kate finds love again.

Shugak is out of her comfort zone, as is Jim Chopin, at Bering. The plot takes in Russian Mafia, an old uni friend of Kate in the background of a hot Alaskan summer when it's all go for the fishing industry.

I liked this and I am reading some more Alaska PI novels now.
I like the characters and consistency, plus it is a part of the world I don't know.
The location and the thrillle plot appeals to me.
I may even try other Stabenow novels, even her short stories

The star of a Kate Shugat novel is usually Alaska, but in MIDNIGHT COME AGAIN the emotionally raw lead protagonist takes center stage. Kate is in transition as she grieves her loss while struggling to learn how to live life without her heart. Dana Stabenow serves up a fascinating and emotionally moving story line that keeps the reader's interest from first page to last. Fans of unpredictable, event-laden tales with plenty of regional color will gain much pleasure from Ms. Stabenow's latest achievement.

I love these novels and I'm certainly hooked, the only frustrating thing (and not the authors fault) is that I have spent a frustrating time trying to find the next novel! Some on Amazon are helpfully numbered but not the next couple....where can I find this out before I give up and read something else?

This it the first book book featuring Kate Shugak and only acquired it because it was free. Turned out to be an interesting page-turner. I particularly enjoyed reading about Alaskan cutural differences in the indeginous population. I gave it 4 rather than 5 stars because whilst I enjoyed the book, it didn't feel a strong urge to go and buy more books by this author.
