For those interested in the period, and in castles in particular, this is a wonderfully interesting addition to knowledge. However, I imagine it would also be interesting for those who have little knowledge - bringing something so unusual back to life can fascinate almost anyone. This also helps correct many modern misunderstandings! No, inhabited castles were not ugly bare stone inside. They were not dark and gloomy, were not freezing and draughty - and were not horribly uncomfortable to live in.
So this is a great job very well completed. I only wish it had been longer.
I have been fascinated by this large if ruinous building for years,
letting my imagination run riot with images of Knights in training,
the young Richard, Duke of Gloucester first playing, and then learning
the art of swordsmanship and a host of other medieval pursuits.
Joseph A Fox has re-kindled this love of castles and particularly,
Middleham, with this brilliant reconstruction of a working castle
home of the last of the Plantagenet Kings.
Using ground plans from site surveys, structural measurements and
thousands of photographs, Mr Fox has truly brought Middleham to life,
with Mr.John L Fox providing an informative and thorough narration for
both the ruins and the reconstruction as one would expect from a
passionate Ricardian.
Richard, Duke of Gloucester, spent a good part of his childhood at
Middleham, and returned again after his marriage to Anne Neville
in 1472, where they could enjoy a quieter life away from Court.
Sadly his son, Edward, always a sickly child, died there in 1484, aged
10.
An excellent DVD of Approx 50 minutes.
Subtitled in English.
Published by lostincastles.com in 2011.
Well worth buying by Ricardians and History Buffs alike.
Middleham was her home and the castle Richard knew as a young man when Ann's father the Earl of Warwick owned it. His change of sides to supporting the Lancastrians cost him his life at the battle of Barnet and his possessions also.
I commend this documentary to those who see a different side to Richard.
