Product Description

Product Description

Bob Chilcott has been described by The Observer as 'a contemporary hero of British Choral Music', and his music is commissioned and sung by choirs throughout the world. His Christmas pieces, a number of which are heard here in première recordings, reveal his enthusiasm for recently written texts, to which he responds with acute verbal sensitivity. Commotio is one of the UK's foremost chamber choirs, hailing from Oxford, where they have performed choral music of the 20th and 21st centuries since 1999.

The central piece of this album is the previously unrecorded carol sequence On Christmas Night, which shows how his ambition is to infuse new blood alongside more traditional melodies and for each to be enriched by it.

Bob Chilcott is one of Britain's most popular and most-performed composers of choral music, and has enriched the contemporary repertoire immensely.

Review

'A formidable portfolio of Christmas music, much of it gathered on this Naxos collection...Technically Chilcott's music is often more demanding than Rutter's, but that's not a problem for the excellent singers of Commotio, expertly conducted here by Matthew Berry.' **** --BBC Music Magazine, Christmas 2013

'Before the ice (O Magnum Mysterium) is an out-and-out masterpiece of choral writing - superbly achieved here, as indeed is all the music throughout the CD by the fine choir Commotio under Matthew Berry.' --International Record Review, December 2013

'There are nine première recordings on this disc, and one cannot imagine them being given a more auspicious baptism. The presentation is of Naxos's best, with a long note by the composer and full texts including the copyright poems. This makes one wonder why other companies in the bargain bracket cannot do the same.' --MusicWeb International, Paul Corfield Godfrey

'The performances are exactly right, too, with an entirely sympathetic choice of choir and director, and the warm, enveloping sound of Keble College Chapel fits it like a comfortable pair of slippers. In short, a winner. This is a disc to listen to with the tree lit up and a cup of Christmas cheer in your hand. --MusicWeb International, Simon Thompson

'Naxos does Chilcott proud with an 80-minute collection of his recent festive music sung by Oxford-based choir Commotio…one of a profusion of wonderful young ensembles that makes this country the world's best for choirs.' --The Mail on Sunday, David Mellor, 22/12/2013

'The performances are exactly right, too, with an entirely sympathetic choice of choir and director, and the warm, enveloping sound of Keble College Chapel fits it like a comfortable pair of slippers. This has to be Chilcott's best yet. The new pieces, particularly The Shepherds Sing and What sweeter music, are glorious and I defy anyone not to be moved and uplifted by their soaring beauty. Chilcott has taken wonderful words and made them his own. This CD is the perfect accompaniament to Christmas. The man is a genius!

This album grabs me and won't let go. This is such a wonderful collection which is beautifully performed. Anyone in a choir needs to listen to this. Some of the songs are simply stunning, and the balance and harmonies are second to none. There are a number of premiere recordings on here too. A joy from start to finish.

A must have for Christmas. Commotio sing with delicacy, power and passion, a beautiful recording, both choir and composers on top form. The last two tracks + silence as the disc ends puts life on hold. Totally stunning.

This collection of Chilcott's Christmas choral works is superbly sung by Commotio - Matthew Berry's highly accomplished choir. There is enormous variety in textures, helped by several instruments used to accompany the choir. The music is wonderful. Chilcott has the same melodic gifts as John Rutter but his harmonies are what mark him out as a great composer of choral music. This CD is very warmly recommended.

Heard Hereford Cathedral Choir sing one of Chilcott's carols in 2012 - loved it. This Christmas they sang another as did King's Cambridge in their TV carol service - The Star Carol. Decided to look for a Christmas present for myself and found this download CD. Just love it to bits. Well understand the reviewer who said this CD "will not let them go".
Sung to perfection with such crisp diction and precise note placement - hence the title of my review.
Don't often review purchases but this one just cries out for it to encourage others to share the pleasure.

Bob Chilcott is one of the go-to composers for most choirs at this time of year as his music lies so well on the voice and the ear. This collection is a mixture of a capella pieces, plus some accompanied by organ or mixed instrumental. The organ gets a fantastic work-out in Les Anges dans nos Campagne (what a tongue twister for the choir) and there are some excellent moments for the harp in th On Christmas Night sequence, plus beautiful solos from professional Soprano, Laurie Ashworth and from Tim Ambrose and Paul Thomas from the choir. This album is so chrismassy it's virtually clove studded.
