Having watched the DVD 2 disc set I thought reading the book would be a bit of a chore.
Surprisingly it wasn't as there's far more interesting bits and pieces in the book that isn't included in the DVD.
There's a lot more of the backbround to what is going on from the off and there's more consideration given to how the though process starts and how they go about trying to get sponsorship for their ride etc. I was glad to see they put this in as I've been considering a similar trip with my brother for some years now and this has awakened the idea but also made me consider how to do it and timeframes etc.
I especially like a lot of the 'footnotes' about what was happening to the support car for example and the diary entries are also a great idea as they add to the overall story being told.
I did mention in my DVD review that I would have liked an index or segment to go through all the kit they used and what they found worked well and what didn't and what they might do differently next time around.
I will however look forward to reading/watching their India trip.
Far better and grittier than the Top Gear adventures where you know unlimited resources, money and celebrity will allow them to overcome everything and the whole thing is then served up on a silver platter by the A Team of techs, editors and producers working in the background.
This was great and down to earth.

Format: Paperback
Note: The author's agent provided me with a paperback copy of the book for review, the opinion of the publication reflects my own personal view

This book ties in with the DVD of the same trip around China which clocked up about 18,000km/11,000 miles in total, following brothers Ryan and Colin on their adventure during this epic bike ride via their BMW cycles.

Firstly the book is written in a dual format it's not a simple diary entry for each day/section of the journey, but you do get a mixture of both. For me this worked better than just a bog standard date by date entry system which can get monotonous after a while.

The next point to note is having seen the DVD of this trip the book is quite a bit different to the documentary production, though there are some obvious major events that are covered by both. This however goes a bit deeper into events and gives you an element of behind the scenes that the DVD can't really cover (due to length limitations I imagine editing etc)

Writing style is engaging and quite fluid striking a good balance between being descriptive enough but offering some detailed insights into the thoughts and feelings of the brothers it makes for an interesting read and it feels genuine and sincere. I've no doubt some notes were taken along the way as there are a lot of details and events that would be hard to get factually correct (places, dates etc) in such a long journey. Credit to the author's for putting in a good effort here this certainly wasn't done as an afterthought.

This book was given to me by the publisher in return for a free, impartial and honest review. Here is said review:

I watched the DVD that accompanies this book, (The Middle Kingdom Ride) before reading which I found really helped build a better image of the journey that Chris and Ryan Pyle took around China. Don't get me wrong, the book did a great job at painting the picture of all of the up's and down's that the two brothers had.
I found that the DVD did not cover 100% of what occurred on their travels (however the major details were included.) and this book really did expand on that.

The format of the book is very easy to read with the inclusion of the odd diary style pages. The writing style is very easy to read (even for someone who rarely reads a book from start to finish, like myself.) Ryan Pyle has been very successful in documenting his travels in a way that is both engaging and complete. I didn't feel as though he had left information out, I just wish there was more to read. At only 276 pages, this book should take you a week of bedtime reading.

The only thing I would like to see improved with this book is the inclusion of more photo's. The book only has 24 photo's, situated in the middle of the book. The photo's are very high quality, printed in full colour with a glossy finish.

This book left me wanting to read more and I ended up rewatching the six episodes which documented this amazing journey. I would highly recommend it to anyone that like motorcycles, traveling, China or even those that love a good story.

I read this book on 3 short haul plane journeys over about 4 hours so its not a long book but is probably about the right length. I enjoyed the book for the most part. The format is a bit odd with both brothers writing about the same events one after the other which becomes a bit tedious unless one brother missed out on something. The book started out a little politically correct and I thought it was going to be a bit too much of a groan but thankfully as the book went on the brothers didn't hold any punches.

A few tricks were missed such as they mention that they had their first Muslim meal and I looked forward to hearing what it was made of or at least what it was called but was left waiting. There is a bit too much talk about miles covered and the sole aim of the brothers seems to be to get ground covered on motorways without engaging with the country. The insights into chinese life are interesting with the strict following of rules sometimes when it makes no sense to the breaking of the law while driving when that also make no sense to the brilliance and inteligence of locals able to repair motorcycles or clear a road block much faster than would ever happen in my own country.

A very readable book which is easy to get through and gives some insight into China. Possibly most suited to someone with a general interest in motorcycles.
