Middle Class Revolt was one of the Fall albums I came to last when searching for their back catalogue. Its previous lack of availability would suggest it had "Fallen" from favour and indeed memory, coming as it did in the middle of The Fall's trickiest decade- the 90's. On first listen however I was hooked. The first four tracks alone are latter- day Fall at their very peak. Behind the counter and M5#1 contain some of the greatest lyrics M.E.S has put to tape, deeply analytical but all presented with great humour. Other highlights include Surmount all obstacles, Hey!Student and the title track, which pack plenty of venom, wit and keen observation into 3/4 minute ditties of driven, relentless genuinely exciting music. Indeed the musicianship is second to none Hanley, Scanlon and Wolstencroft are a musical powerhouse sounding more vital and fresh than any of their competition at this point (this was the year of Parklife and Definitely Maybe.) This particular line- up of the band is my favourite. This latest reissue of the album comes with a disc of bonus material including signle mixes and b- sides, remixes and a Peel session just for good measure. This album has often recieved lukewarm reviews at best and it certainly isn't their very best, but we're only talking in terms of an already formidable canon of Fall music. I believe you can purchase this album with confidence if already a fan and certainly put it on the wish list if you're just getting into the Fall.

I never like to disagree with anyone, but I think that three stars in incredibly harsh.I really do think that this Fall LP contains enough examples of Mark E Smith's genius to satisfy anyone.15 Ways,The Reckoning,Middle Class Revolt,You're Not Up To Much, the three awe-inspiring cover versions (including a gloriously noisy versions of 60s garage band The Monks already riotous Shut Up)-there is enough here to warrant purchase.
