HASH(0x8fcaa5dc) out of 5 stars Excellent 14 April 2014
By DallasWits - Published on Amazon.com
I am a freelance IT Consultant that deals primarily with small businesses.
I have supported many types of small businesses over the years, across many platforms, with varying degrees of reliability / performance / ease of use.

I have installed 2012 essentials, 2012 r2 essentials, 2012 standard and 2012 r2 standard to roughly 45 locations where they now continue to operate. Like the names should imply, Essentials is the way to go for many locations that only needs a basic IT foot print, and standard is of course the infinitely configurable beast we all know in the IT Admin world.

The biggest feature of 2012 for my smallest clients is that the built in server backup software is now compatible with very large drives. Thus saving the client the price of 3rd party local backup software.

I love using the Essentials version in small law offices. The built in file versioning and deletion prevention tools are a huge time saver.

And there are a ton more things that have been added/changed, but there is already a ton of info out there on it, and i need to get back to work. I just had to say that this is, without doubt, the correct way that Microsoft needs to be moving to stay relevant in the spaces that i operate in.

HASH(0x903c2f48) out of 5 stars Works well but overkill as a WHS 2011 replacement 16 Dec. 2014
By CFortC - Published on Amazon.com
I evaluated this server software as a replacement for my Windows Home Server 2011 package running on an HP Microserver. All comments here are based on that usage scenario, for a home office with less than 10 Windows clients. One factor in motivating such an upgrade is that WHS 2011 has a limited future support life. The other factor was that my WHS 2011 installation was giving me some reliability problems because of a certificate issue, so I was looking at a complete re-install anyway.

It goes without saying that this Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials product is a very major superset of WHS 2011 functionality. I noticed at least two significant functions that probably aren't appropriate for a small home office environment:

(1) Default domain server and joining of new clients to the domain. If you use the defaults then local user accounts on the clients are migrated to the domain. This is desirable in a larger environment but usually will be overkill for a small home office. Fortunately there is an override option to prevent automatically migrating new clients to the domain.

(2) Default DNS server (running on the Windows server). All the clients refer to the local server for DNS and the local server falls back to the your router's DNS only if necessary. Initially I tried to disable this server feature but it seemed to break other things so I reinstalled with the default DNS turned on.This DNS mode didn't seem to cause any issues in my environment but of course does introduce another point of failure.

Ultimately, I reinstalled WHS 2011 and plan to run out its support clock.

HASH(0x900255f4) out of 5 stars Best basic small business server platform 2 May 2015
By Bill L. - Published on Amazon.com

Best server platform for the small business with 25 or fewer users, and basic file server needs. Does not support many of the additional server modules that can be plugged into the Server Standard platform, but if what you need is a central server to serve files and printers, or maybe run a network centered SQL database application, this variation on the Server 2012 R2 scheme is both reliable, reasonably easy to setup, and very affordable.

HASH(0x901ea0c0) out of 5 stars Actually is 3 licenses! 16 Dec. 2014

OK I didn't know this before I bought it but this license is actually enough for 1 physical and 2 virtual environments, so over this license covers 3 installs. And the enforcement method is the honor system on that they are installed on virtuals.

HASH(0x8fcaaaf8) out of 5 stars Good system, hard to set up as an upgrade 30 Sept. 2014

Excellent system. I ran the original 2012 Essentials for 2 years and just upgraded to this. Beware that there is not really an upgrade path from one to the other. Every computer joined to the domain will have its desktop reset. Was a giant pain to fix up all the clients. In the end it's a very good server operating system though and way easier than setting up 2012 standard from scratch.
