Microsoft Surface 3 Tablet
From the manufacturer
The Best of a Tablet
Microsoft Surface is built around a durable magnesium body that's incredibly light and thin, so you'll feel confident taking it anywhere. With up to 10 hours of video playback, a beautiful 10.8" display, and integrated Kickstand, Surface 3 is perfect for hands-free entertainment wherever you go.
Works Like a Laptop When You Need it
Powered by an Intel processor, Microsoft Surface runs Windows desktop software like iTunes and Chrome. Click in a backlit keybaord and connect easily to your accessories with the full-size USB 3.0 port.
Runs Windows & Office
With Windows 10, you can multitask by running two apps side by side. For a limited time, Microsoft Surface includes one year of Office 365 Personal plus OneDrive cloud storage.
Great Pen Experience
With the click of the Pen a blank sheet is available for quick notes even if Surface is asleep. Use the Pen to mark up presentations, sign documents, or enjoy art apps.
Top customer reviews
lightweight and easy to carry, I really value this, since I travel a lot. It's helpful to be able to work onthe move (such as in an airline queue), which one cannot do with a standard laptop. However, it is not super lightweight, so don;t expect to be able to do long periods of 1-handed reading on the device.
Can legitimately be used as a tablet, and is able to replace my laptop for the tasks I require.
Kickstand is cool, and in my experience works pretty well even when balance on my knees etc. The 3 positions are adequate
The pen is helpful. I don't make many notes on the device but i find the pen extremely useful in drag-and-drop, for example in organising emails in Outlook. That being said though, the main reason that the pen is so useful is because it is difficult to do these things with the touch screen
The type cover is decent. I bought it about 1 month after purchasing the tablet. It feels a bit flimsy and the suede cover while nice is sure to collect dirt/stains if you work in cafes etc a lot, but overall it is good. The trackpad is narrow and, while prior to purchase I thought that the touchscreen would render this unecessary in fact it is a little annoying. The trackpad is also off-centre, which I find irritating for getting right/left clicks correct.
Screen is nice. Seems very high quality, although i do not know much about such things.
What's not so good
I'm no lover of Apple but I do often despair at Microsoft inability to see how people use things in the real world. While this is not as frustrating an experience as some Microsoft products, there are a few bizzare/annoying grumbles which let the product down and prevent me from giving an extra star.
-Keyboard required. In tablet mode, I don't believe the device can be used to full functionality without an external keyboard or mouse. For example, using Excel is near impossible without an external mouse.
-Applications sleep if the device sleeps. I listen to music and the radio via internet. I had hoped Surface 3 would allow me to do that, but since the applications sleep when the device sleeps (unlike most laptops), the music or radio will shut off when the device sleeps. So your options are not to use it, or have it "always on", which uses battery and is annoying to have to change the settings each time I want to listen.
-Pen should have more functionality. It would be better if the pen could be customised to become more than a writing device. In most applications, the pen can provide right-click and act to allow you to write. I would prefer if you could use it to drag-and-drop, resize etc like a mouse. I rarely need to use handwriting in Word. I often need to drag, drop and resize.
-Tablet mode keyboard is not intuitive, and in fact the keyboard/typing is one of the poorest features. Without the external keyboard attached, you have to use an on-screen keyboard like on a smartphone, but this is poorly executed in classic Microsoft style. Firstly, the keyboard does not automatically appear when you select the cursor into a field. For example, when you put the cursor onto the web address bar, nothing happens. You have to then click a small keyboard icon in the system tray. Not the most helpful and against what most people are used to on their phones. In fact, I discover sometime later that there is an option for the keyboard to auto appear, but it's off by default (good thinking Microsoft), and even when on it doesn't appear in all situations. Furthermore, there is no Swype or similar function, which is really tiresome when you want to use the device one-handed in tablet mode. Typing fast tends to overwhelm the onscreen keyboard so that you end up selecting many strange characters or accents which are activitated by double tapping or holding keys.
Finally many applications do not auto-adjust the screen when the on-screen keyboard appears. Since the keyboard takes about half the screen, in many cases when you bring up the keyboard it covers the field you are typing into, meaning that you can't see what you are typing (see photo for use of on-screen keyboard with this review). This is pretty annoying, and as 100% of smartphone manufacturers seem to be able to manage this its' not clear why mega-corporation Microsoft can't do this.
The device also loses power when asleep, and I find this a major drawback. Although the stated time for battery life is 6-8 hours, in reality in my experience this is not usage time. Last weekend, I had the tablet with me for the whole day but only used it for about 2 hours of that time (wifi disabled when asleep). It was out of battery within 8 hours. Since the recharge time is 4 hours, this really reduces the utility of it as a travel device.
The touchscreen is pretty good, but at times is inaccurate and this can be frustrating if you press the wrong button because the touch screen registers your touch in the wrong place.
Other minor concerns
Not instant on - takes a few seconds to come alive after you press the power button. This continually catches me out, since when there's apparently no response I touch power button again, which means it thenvturns it off immediately after it does awake.
Would have liked another USB port
Have not worked out the point of the Windows button on the bezel. Since this is already available at the Start menu, the bezel button seems pointless and mostly serves to irritate by being pressed accidentally
I have learned that the device does not like it if it was put to sleep with the keyboard cover attached but woken up without it. In this case, it often malfunctions and becomes a pain to use until restarted.
The cost is too high given that you need to buy the pen and keyboard as extras at significant cost. Cost at time was around over 500 quid before pruchase of the extras
So.....a long list of negatives and short list of positives according to my review. But I still recommend the product. It's good overall, and the annoyances are manageable. Just adjust your expectations to what you normally expect from Microsoft.
