This very heavy book covers all aspects of SQL Server. I use SQL only for analytical work so some chapters are not very useful, but I have yet to find a book that only covers this area. The sections I use are clear and explain each process. There are examples used throughout the book, which you can copy into your own code. One drawback is that the index is not that great and where you want to perform a task it is difficult to work out where you should look. If you wanted to save money you could just search for each term on the internet, but I have found that this does not always work. However, it does give you the key word to search for in the book. I don't think that I would have purchased this at full price unless my work was paying, but a good second hand copy is well worth having on your desk.

No book can cover the vast subject of Microsoft SQL Server (in this case version 10, a.k.a. 2008) in its entirely, but this book comes very close to doing that. It covers 76 chapters and the chapters in turn are grouped under 10 Parts based on high-level subject areas or themes such as Foundation, Data Connectivity, Security, Performance Tuning and Optimisation, et cetera.

There is clear evidence that the book was written from author's own vast experience, as the author (as well as contributing authors) provide practical insights into the whys and how-to design approaches - the quality nowadays lacking with most [prescriptive - do-like-this without explaining why] books. For example the "Best Practice" side notes that show up at relevant points throughout the book attest to this point.

This is a hefty book in 76 chapters and over 1600 pages, but it is more like getting many books in one binding. This is the case because some of the 10 Parts can actually stand out as a self-contained book. You will note that most other database books just cover a small subset of this book and do not necessarily give as much expected focus to the subject area. This is an excellent book that lives up to its title. It is suitable for a wide range of skills (beginner to advanced) as well as professions (developers/programmers, DBAs, business analysts). I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel with new features of the new SQL Server version 11 (a.k.a. 2012) - Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Bible - due to be released sometime in 2012.

I found this book to be extensive and readable at the same time. As a developer, this is the kind of book that becomes a backstop in your working library of texts. It covers all things on the BI-stack from an experienced veterans view. That's valuable because its concise in explaining concepts, emphasizing only the things that are going to be useful in the real world. This release of SQLServer was a great product and the authors enthusiasm for it certainly comes through.
