Having previously used a Nokia 800 and a Nokia 925, I was keen to get the MS 950, but every mainstream review I read online was lukewarm at best. I then found out that Vodafone was not stocking it outside a handful of large stores. I then found it on display at a Carphone Warehouse (not a real one, but an empty mock-up with a stuck-on screen shot) and it looked and felt awful. Having previously owned a Samsung and Nexus 7 and vowing never to use the appalling Android OS again, and having an iPhone 6 from work and not wanting another one, I decided to ignore the avalanche of criticism and the horrendous example on show at the store and order a MS 950 phone. The bottom line: I am glad I did.

- Unboxing and Getting Started

Some people think the original box is important. Well, the box is very smart and the phone is nicely presented. Getting the back off the phone to put the sim card in was particularly tricky and the illustration in the get started instructions contradicts the MS directions online. At one point the phone flew out of my hand and landed on the floor and made my heart stop. The Nokia 635 has a removeable hard shell back that is simple to take off. This should not be so hard.

Once the SIM card and 128GB Micro SDHC card were installed, the phone display said “Getting things ready” and was stuck on this for over 30 minutes before I gave up. An internet search indicates that this is not an uncommon problem (how can getting a new phone just to start be a problem?).

Introduction

So I finally have it, my Lumia 950. With the arrival of Microsoft’s first flagship handset, running their latest mobile operating system, things could really shape up and get interesting. The real question is, can Microsoft’s latest device hold its ground, especially when the competition is already fierce?

In all honesty, if you’d have told me 6 months ago that I’d be using a Windows device as my daily driver, I’d have laughed myself to death. I hated Windows 8 and disliked Windows Mobile just as much. The whole thing just seemed to be a mess, but after trying the Insider version of Windows 10 Mobile, my ice cold heart started to melt. A few months later and I’m wielding a Lumia 950.

So, let’s take a look at my thoughts and impressions.

Look and Feel

The first thing you’ll notice about the Lumia 950 is how nondescript it looks. A plain black slab with rounded corners. There’s no metal, but I don’t mind, the plastic shell feels durable with its matte finish, and it’s replaceable. On the rear of the device you’ll find a silver windows logo, camera hump, and triple LED flash. At the top is a single 3.5mm headphone jack, then left side has nothing, the bottom has a USB C port, and then the right side has volume rocker, power/lock button, and a camera key!

So all in all, it’s pretty plain, but it looks smart. The Lumia 950 resembles something I’d expect to see if the HTC HD7 and the Samsung Galaxy S2 had a baby.

I bought my Lumia 950 on pre order direct from Microsoft & as such my review is based on the phone only.

I've owned a Windows Phone since 2011 so no stranger tothe platform. I use the phone for both work and personal use.

Windows 10 mobile has great promise. The OS is still new on mobile and as such it does have the occasional wobble (occasionally an open might close on opening and the phone has rebooted a couple of times). Microsoft are pushing out regular updates and I expect these minor issues to be ironed out.

Battery life is fine, comfortably seeing me through a working day. The USB C fast charge is excellent and works a treat. Screen is excellent and some of the pictures you can take on the fantastic camera are just sensational. The dedicated camera button is here too and this opens the camera app quickly and without fuss.
The device is both slim and lightweight certainly compared to my previous phone (Lumia 930). The polycarb case does not feel or look cheap irrespective of what Apple users might try have you believe. The phone is durable and feels far more comfortable in hand than the metal rimmed 930.

Windows Hello can be a little inconsistent but as its Beta this will only improve. Continuum could be a real productivity boost for business users (for whom this phone is IMO a no brainer). Interchangeable casing provide choice for those who want it and the removable battery makes a welcome return.

There are of course limitations with the apps in the Windows Store but I haven't found anything I "need" that I cant get. If you're a snapchatter you're out of luck though at the minute.

If you're new to Windows Phone you shouldn't be disappointed.

Recommended.
