I had my reservations about buying such a large phone but in practice it is no problem and the screen size benefit far outweighs any small negatives. Holding the windows key toggles a one handed mode which brings the top of the screen into reach, but I rarely need this. The display is beautifully crisp and bright, although it has a slight shimmering effect if you change viewing angle when showing large areas of white. This doesn't affect normal use and web pages/apps/photos etc look amazing. The glance feature which keeps key information on the screen even when it's 'off' is a nice touch.
Windows Hello login is useful but not fast/reliable enough to be a key addition. Perhaps this will improve as it is a beta feature, but for now I usually just use my PIN. Text messages and other notifications can be replied to directly without opening the app which I really like, the web browser is excellent and I haven't found any pages it doesn't handle yet. Phone call quality is great and visual voicemail works well. The speaker is a little quiet and it would be good if the Bluetooth volume setting was retained - I have to reset it every time it connects to the car,
The camera is amazing, especially with indoor photos in low light where most photos would normally be a dark blurry mess. I have a young child so I particularly appreciate the short videos captured before every shot. Time between shots is very quick but it can take a while to have pictures ready for viewing. Video recording works as expected and quality seems good too.Read more ›
On day one the 950XL ran hot while charging and the battery depleted quickly. Most of the day was spent updating numerous apps and installing new firmware. Once the updates installed the phone settled down. It no longer overheats and battery life is excellent — far better than my old HTC One.
Adding new words to the dictionary isn't straightforward; but notifying Microsoft about bugs is easy using their Feedback app. How long will it take Windows-as-a-Service to flatten bugs?
Apart from the above initial niggles the phone's everyday performance has been stellar, and I'm very pleased to have jumped ship.
The camera image quality is outstanding compared to any phone camera that I've ever used. I spent a while researching imaging apps and found a couple of really good ones. Pixlr Express isn't up to speed compared to the Android version — hopefully Autodesk will remedy this oversight.
I can now connect phone to computer and instantly transfer files — unlike the HTC Manager navigational nightmare.
I haven't tried Continuum; but I've ordered the free dock using the Lumia Offers app.
Overall, I'm extremely pleased with my 950XL.
However, a colleague in work recently bought this and all those problems seems to have been fixed, so your experience may be better than my initial one.
You probably already know about W10 mobile's lack of app developer support, so I won't go on about that too much, other than to mention than popular apps such as Snapchat aren't present in the Windows Store.
The screen is a gorgeous 5.7" 1440p AMOLED panel, rivalling Android flagships and even besting my iPhone 6S Plus.
The phone is light and nice to hold in the hand, but is still easily a two handed device. The lightness is mainly due to the plastic build of the device, which makes this feel a lot less like a flagship device, and more like a mid range one.
On that note, even though this is technically Microsoft's flagship device, it's priced like a mid range one now, and can usually be gotten for around £200; a price thats hard to pass up.
If you're looking for a new experience, for a good value device, for something that works alongside your Windows 10 PC at home, then I'd recommend this device over the smaller (and cheaper) Lumia 950.
If you're someone who craves the latest apps and has to have the same phone as your friends... Then you probably already know that this isn't for you.
