Amazon.co.uk Review

More often than not, when a game is in development for over three years it does not live up to the hype. Bungie's Halo is the exception. Not only does the game live up to the hype--it greatly exceeds it. This sci-fi first-person shooter is a nearly perfect blend of gameplay, graphics, and sound.

The story revolves around the conflict between humans and an alien race known as the Covenant. The aliens have discovered a powerful artefact--on the ring-shaped planet called Halo--that will shift the balance of power and it's up to the player to stop them. In addition to several first-person shooter levels there are numerous opportunities to engage in vehicular combat. Both the enemy and ally artificial intelligence are extremely impressive. Enemies will use the terrain and layout to put you in tight spots. Allies will know when to cover and aid you. For instance, if you hop into a jeep an ally will know to jump in and man the turret on the back of it.

Graphics are exquisitely detailed, but only move at 30 frames per second rather than 60. The sound effects and voice-acting are superb. The level design is among the best ever; most of the game is engaging and challenging without being frustrating. There's also high replay value thanks to the built-in single-player, cooperative, and death match modes.

Much like the outstanding GoldenEye 007 for Nintendo 64, Halo raises the bar for console first-person shooters. It will be the title that all console action games are measured against for years to come.--Raymond M Padilla

Halo must be the best game I've ever played on a console. Grafics are amazing. The very different outdoor sceneries are huge, beautiful and detailed. You never get bored running around in the snow or jungle, while messing up the enemies with the great selection of weapon you have. But then on the other hand there simply must be a catch with something so great like this game is. I think that some of the indoor scenes are too alike. Sometimes you can get a little bored walking around in the long and dull passages.
My conclusion? Buy the game! You'll never regret it.

3 years development of Halo has really paid off. The story plot is deep and unprecedented, action packed and gamer gripping. As a cyborg human Spartan II soldier, you must defend the existence of humanity against a cold blooded alien race - The Covenant who declare a holy war against mankind to rid them of the universe. Alongside truly realistic marines and an arsenal of powerful weapons and vehicles you battle through the ring world - Halo and discover the horrific secrets of the alien world.
Not only does Halo come through as being one of the most well thought, detailed and action packed first person shoot em ups but it also delivers non stop co-operative play and 4 screen multiplayer battles aswell as 16 fighting through a system link together.
However, not every game is perfect and whilst Halo is outstanding to watch and play, the developers (Bungie) have really limited the gamer to the range of weapons but this is overshadowed by the interaction 'Masterchief'(you) can have with both human and alien vehicles and weapons. My favourite vehichle being the Warthog (all terrain buggie) which is capable of supporting 3 marines, one at the back tearing through enemies with the electric powered anti-aircraft gun. Nice :D
The detail in Halo is amazing. From the actions and personalities of the marines, the detail and graphical amazement in the environments and fighting. This game is a definite buy for all gamers who love 1st person shoot em ups and plot twisting action to gamers who crave to see the potential the X-box can perform up to.

Now when the people at Microsoft were thinking about the XBOX launch line-up, they needed something that could for fill three very important requirements:
1. Show off the XBOX'S power, graphically and audibly
2. Be easily accessible and fun to play
3. Set a new standard for gaming and come out on top at the end of the day
In other words, they needed something a bit special.
And where is this groundbreaking game you ask? Well it comes in the form of the highly anticipated and much talked about, HALO.
This really is one game that lives up to the hype, stunning visual effects, brilliant enemy, and allied, AI, great sound effects, well scripted voice acting, and most importantly, amazing and engrossing game-play. This game oozes quality and playability. When I first picked up the Xbox controller and pressed that little green 'A' to select campaign mode I was so excited I nearly wet my self! (Nearly) The tension builds as, in the first level, you find out that you've crash-landed in what looks like a forest on some sort of alien world and all you friends are dead. And then there are the Covenant drop-ships that are looking for you to bust a bullet in your head! I won't tell you any more about the first level just in case your planning on getting one of these beautiful, lean, green, Gamecube killing machines and Halo. I wouldn't want to spoil the surprise for you.
Now lets take a look at some of the features, which make Halo one of the Best First Person Shooters ever.
In Halo its not FPS action all the way, a little bit of skilled driving is needed too. You'll have to command these four vehicles, and adapt to each ones controls and driving, or flying, style. Here are some of the awesome auto's you can drive.

I hadn't played this game until years after it came out. I was with a friend at his and he had an Xbox. And this game. To put it in three easy phrases - I saw. I played. It blew me away. It was at the time possibly the best game I'd ever played. I had to get it, and fast. So, Christmases later, the Xbox came...and so did Halo.
This isn't just a great game, it's legendary and it's probably what made the Xbox so popular. It's a damn good thing that Microsoft weren't thick enough to sell it off to PS2 or Gamecube companies. With its compelling storyline, thrilling soundtrack and intensive game play, this is a game like no other. The graphics are of the highest standard in every aspect with virtually no flaws whatsoever. The storyline really does drag you in and the dialogue is far from poor. The idea that composer Martin O'Donnell has for the soundtrack is totally right, including various atmospheric tunes with suites from throughout the game. The game play may not be entirely original but it lives up to FPS gaming standards none-the-less and includes so many new dimensions to the genre. The maps are hugely rendered with many different terrains in the levels. The fact that it has such realistic elements involved means that it rarely fails to impress.
If there are any bad points about this game then the multiplayer mode falls into this pit. The fact that there are no bots involved completely brings a game mode that could've been brilliant down to just good. But that'll be happily remedied by the new addition of these in Halo 2! The other point is the shortage of weapons. A rocket launcher, sniper rifle, pistol (note that this isn't the worst weapon like in many other games) and the assault rifle just aren't enough human weapons.
