Setting up the mouse is relatively quick and painless, with as much time dedicated to getting the additional weights and mouse feet configured just right as to downloading and installing the Intellimouse software from the Microsoft Web Site.
Once installed, the software is easy to use, with the variable DPI settings and button assignments quick and straightforward to alter.
Whilst I play games frequently, my reasons for purchasing this mouse were not gaming related - I do a lot of photo editing & wanted something that could be very sensitive when required and yet also allow for detailed work with a fine degree of control. In this regard the mouse is truly excellent (It's also pretty good for gaming too).
With the addition of the supplied weights, the mouse feels solid and very nicely weighted and is a joy to use (I liked it so much that I bought myself another one to use on my PC at work...). It's a well put together piece of kit that doesn't feel as though it's going to fall apart any time soon. This is particularly true of the side mounted buttons and the heavy scroll wheel - all of which have a satisfying action.
All in all, a great mouse that I would thoroughly recommend...
Anyway I'm not sure if I like it yet. My primary reason for buying it was the 2 nice thumb buttons on the side. Like the previous reviewer I wanted to use them in games like COD 4 for ducking and grenade toss. The trouble is the mouse is long and my thumb dosen't naturally sit on the buttons, I can adjust my hand slightly and may find that I do so over time anyway, but if the mouse was 5-10 mil shorter it would be better for me. If you have small hands you may want to stay away or find somewhere or someone who can let you try the mouse out of the box.
The variable DPI is also strange. You get 3 settings you can choose at a click of one of the top buttons and you can choose what DPI they are set at with the software. The thing is there are 6 presets ranging from 200 to 2000 but the spacing isn't even. You get 200, 400, 800, 1000, 1600, 2000. I would have like either truely variable or something in the 1000 to 1600 range.
This isn't to give the mouse a bad review, Microsoft generally make nice good quality hardware and this is both. It's just that a mouse can be a personal taste thing and when you're paying over £30 you don't want to waste your cash.
Oh and Amazon does appear to have the best UK price I've seen, damn Google for pointing me elsewhere.
The mouse does take some getting used to as you may start accidentally pressing the back and forward buttons, but you will get used to it.
The metal scroll wheel is nice and robust.
Overall good mouse, with a bit of a learning curve, and not for the small handed.
Although the mouse wheel is starting to 'flick' upwards occasionally after scrolling down, this is probally due to the many hundreds of thousands of clicks its endured in the hundreds of hours in the first person shooter counter strike. Its very accurate and works on most surfaces, at the moment i have a peice of semi-glossy paper selotaped to the table as a mouse mat and its surprisingly effective. I'm on my 3rd set of nylon feet now which were replaced not long ago so i wouldnt worry about them wearing out too quickly.
The side buttons are fantastically useful as backward and forward buttons when browsing the internet. Not so usful ingame as they require more concentration to press then i would care to give them ingame.
If you are thinking of buying a new mouse soon i would nto recomend this mouse, as there are better mouse available such as the razer deathadder (best value option), logitech MX518 (the budget option) or the newly released logitech G700.
It is very smooth and accurate to use as it uses a laser for tracking. It will work on pretty much any surface. The speed can be changed via buttons on the top of the mouse between 800, 1000 and 2000 to easily change the speed it moves on screen.
It has the standard left and right buttons plus the roller ball which are all very smooth in operation. Additionally, it has two programmable buttons on the left hand side which you can assign functions to.
Finally, it also comes with a set of weights which you can put inside a compartment which opens on the right hand side. This lets you adjust the weight of the mouse which I was surprised makes quite a difference to its comfort during use.
The only criticism I have is that which has been mentioned in other reviews - it's size. It is quite a big mouse so if you have small hands you may find it a little uncomfortable under extended use.
