It Plays as Hard as it Works

Windows 8.1 gives you the power to quickly browse, watch films, play games, polish your CV, and pull together a great presentation — all on a single PC. Now you can organise up to three apps on your screen at once in a single view.

The Start Screen

Personalize your Start screen with your favourite news, friends, social networks, and apps. Customisable colours and backgrounds and four different sizes of tiles make your device as unique as you are.

The Apps you Want

In addition to great built-in apps for email, people, photos and video editing – you can also download thousands of popular apps from the Windows Store.

Security

Stay up to date and more secure with Windows Defender, Windows Firewall, and Windows Update.

Speed

Windows 8.1 starts up faster, switches between apps faster, and uses power more efficiently than previous versions of Windows, including Windows 7.

Your Familiar Desktop

From the Start screen, you are just a click away from the familiar Windows desktop you know so you can do the stuff you’ve always done.

Multitasking Made Easy

It’s easy to do more at once. Snap multiple apps side by side in a single view for easy multitasking.

Mouse, Keyboard—and now Touch

Windows 8.1 works harmoniously with various types of devices, including touch, mouse-and-keyboard, or both. Whatever kind of device you have, you'll discover fast and fluid ways to switch between apps, move things around, and go smoothly from one place to another.

Your files, Everywhere

Stay connected to your photos and important files and access them on your phone, tablet or PC with SkyDrive. By signing in with your Microsoft account to any of your PCs running Windows 8.1 and you'll immediately see your own background, display preferences, and settings.

You Keep all your Files

If your PC is running Windows 7, your files, apps and settings will easily transfer to Windows 8.1 Pro.

You Keep Familiar Programs

Programs that run on Windows 7 will run on Windows 8.1 Pro.

Your Office. Your Way.

Experience Office at its best on Windows 8 devices. Discover new and better ways to create, edit, and browse—using a keyboard, pen, or touchscreen. Don't forget: Office is not part of Windows 8.

Some features require Windows 8.1. Update available through Windows store for Windows 8 users. Internet access required; fees may apply. Don’t forget, Office isn’t included in Windows 8.

Edition: 8.1 Pro
The new UI that greets you when you first log on to Windows 8.1 definitely takes you by surprise - and takes time getting used to. It does make sense on a touch-enabled device, but very little on a traditional desktop/laptop. There are nice sides to it (weather app, easy searching and a few others) - but I still find Microsoft's decision to "impose" it on non-touch users rather pre-mature.

HOWEVER - the moment you switch to the traditional desktop mode, Windows 8.1 shines. It loads/shuts down faster, it clogs your PC memory less, there are many small tweaks here and there compared to Windows 7 and older. It's the "leanest" Windows version out there - absolutely no bloatware (and the few "New UI" apps can be easily uninstalled - compare that to Vista!).

Very easy and fast installation and initial setup.

More than 12 months into using Windows 8 and 8.1, I must say most of the above initial impressions still hold (to clarify - have been using it on 2 desktops and 2 non-touch laptops):
- I have never got to using 'Modern UI' apps, bar occasional use of Weather and News apps
- The OS has proved very stable and 'light' in terms of resource footprint
- Shines on new hardware, boots up and shuts down instantly

With version 8.

Edition: 8.1 Pro Verified Purchase
Purchased this direct from Amazon in January 2015, purely as a means to get the free promotional Win10 upgrade when it was released in July. I received the full retail version of Windows 8.1 Pro exactly as advertised.

2 Star grading:
I am a desktop user and don't require touch-screen functionality. The user interface I found to be really horrible as things were not easily accessible. This was purely because the primary functionality of this Windows edition was geared more toward a touch-screen user, whilst the needs of desktop users was ignored

4 Star grading:
The only reason I bought this product in January was to access the free promotional upgrade to Windows 10 Professional. I assumed that the product would keep it's status as a retail license and that I would subsequently maintain full rights to transfer to any other device

3 Star grading
As previously stated I expected Win8.1►Win10 free upgrade to maintain the full retail license as a like-for-like license. I was however, sadly mistaken on this point. It became apparent from reading Microsoft policy (line by line), that the retail license becomes an OEM license on the 29th July 2016 and the right of transfer is lost. I complained to Microsoft Corporate HQ by email and then the issue was escalated to senior management in the USA to resolve the issue who phoned me and gave me their direct phone number and personal (corporate) email address. I pointed out the policy is not consistent with EULA. That I was mislead into buying a retail edition of 8.1 when an OEM copy would have resulted in the same Win10 license, meaning I was out of pocket. That it could be argued Microsoft had acted in unlawfully in the way some licenses were being upgraded.

Edition: 8.1 Pro
The initial portion of this review addresses the final stage of an progressive upgrade from Windows 7 with an intermediate step --lasting one year-- at Windows 8 before progressing to Windows 8.1.

Here's the bottom line up front: If you are a power user of Windows 7, and you can keep running your current hardware with a Windows 7 variant: I can't think of a single compelling reason to make this change. If you're already using Window 8, proceeding with the evolution to Windows 8.1 will provide a marginal improvement to the user experience.

The netbook I installed Windows 8 on did not have sufficient display resolution to install 8.1 directly from the Windows Store, so I had to run the installation separately via a downloadable 8.1 installer application.

The good news: The Windows 8 to 8.1 upgrade was issue free (which mirrored the earlier Windows 7 to Windows 8 upgrade experience). It retained all of my previously installed OS settings, data files and applications.

The not so good news: once Windows 8.1 was in place, the fundamental user interface remains the same Windows 8 experience that is kindly described as "awkward at best". After more than a of using this operating system, I still feel like I'm working at half speed whenever I'm interacting with it.

Most of the 8.1 improvements are under the hood. The biggest interface change is the return --sort of-- of the Start button. It is rather non-intuitive in that you have to right mouse click to reveal it. Once you do, you'll learn that it is more like a cousin than a brother to the Start button from pre-Windows 8 versions. You will encounter an utter lack of customizing (no pinning programs you use most often, no recent documents listing, no dragging items from the task bar to the Star menu).
