Product Description

2027. Sunset City. A contaminated energy drink has transformed most of the population into a multitude of toxic mutants. For many it's the end of the world, but for you it’s a dream come true. Your old boss? Dead. Your boring job? Gone. Transform the open-world into your tactical playground by grinding, vaulting and wall-running across the city while using a devastating, unconventional arsenal. With hyper-agility, unique weapons, and customizable special abilities, “Sunset Overdrive” rewrites the rules of traditional shooters and delivers an explosive, irreverent, stylish, and totally unique adventure exclusively to Xbox One.

Welcome to the Awesomepocalypse

Sunset Overdrive is set in the fictional American metropolis Sunset City. The story begins when a resident mega-corporation, Fizzco, hosts a massive release party for its hot new energy drink: Overcharge Delirium XT.

But...the beverage was rushed to market. Profit first! Most of Sunset City is transformed into an array of various mutants, also called the “OD’d”. The city is quarantined and morphs into a chaotic, mutant-infested Awesomepocalypse. Soon, you realize a life of playing videogames, watching action movies, and reading comic books has given you the tools to become the hero Sunset City desperately needs.

As you progress through the epic campaign, you’ll encounter numerous plot twists and surprises, and work to unite a diverse group of survivor factions in your quest to save Sunset City and reveal Fizzco’s sadistic cover-up scheme.

A vibrant and immersive open world

Sunset Overdrive possesses a soul and style unlike any other shooter on the market – vibrant, irreverent, thrilling and explosive.

Set in a sprawling, colorful city teeming with crazed enemies and powerful, unconventional weapons, “Sunset Overdrive” turns the apocalypse into your own playground of carnage and mutant destruction. Filled to the brim with Insomniac Games’ trademark humor and satire, “Sunset Overdrive” is a rebellious game that breaks the rules and flips modern conventions of post-apocalyptic shooters on their head.

Fast and explosive gameplay

Sunset Overdrive immerses you in a pulse-pounding, frenetic action experience unlike any other. With a vast arsenal of devastating weapons and insane parkour moves, you can jump, wall-run, grind, zipline and vault across the entire environment to build up your Style Meter and gain a tactical advantage on your enemies.

Each weapon in your arsenal is infused with Insomniac Games’ hallmark creativity, and allows virtually endless opportunities to mix and match different ones to explosive effect. Surrounded by mutants on all sides? Lure them away by firing delicious cans of Overcharge Delirium XT from the Captain Ahab, and then sit back and detonate an explosive teddy bear with the TNTeddy grenade launcher.

Express yourself!

Sunset Overdrive lets you become whatever hero you can imagine, giving you virtually endless options to customize your appearance and play style. Play as male or female, choose your preferred body type, and rock various hair styles, tattoos, clothing or accessories that best showcase your personality.

Additionally, by building up your Style Meter, you’ll activate Amps. These special player abilities allow you to customize your style of gameplay. Find powerful Epic Amps like the Twist of Fate, which can set off a nuclear explosion. Or summon weather like Tornados and Lightning with your Amp slots available in each weapon. Players can craft new Amps by using amp recipes and ingredients can be found across the city.

Eight-player cooperative online action

Sunset Overdrive lets you and up to seven other players team up on Xbox Live in an action-packed online mode called “Chaos Squad.” Players join together to cause havoc throughout the city, voting on a series of missions with a risk-reward mechanic. Do they boost the Chaos level of the city, increasing both the difficulty and the potential rewards? Or do they take a team power-up, sacrificing some rewards to make things easier?

Culminating in a cooperative version of Night Defense, successful players unlock big rewards including in-game cash, Overcharge, crafting recipes, new weapons and vanity items. The seamless transition between the campaign and Chaos Squad lets you keep your newfound winnings across all game modes. Powered by Xbox Live, Chaos Squad lets you switch from campaign to online multiplayer and back virtually instantly.

Two-way communication and dynamic updates

Sunset Overdrive will bring a new level of community interaction. New events and content will be introduced into the game at regular intervals post-launch, and players will have the opportunity to determine items they can earn permanently in subsequent updates.3 Sunset TV, a weekly show that streams inside of Sunset City, will also bring the voice of the developer into the game on a continuous basis, and player feedback will shape the long-term evolution of Sunset City.

Sunset Overdrive is rated 16+, but there's settings to censor the profanity and dial back the gore - not that it's really that gory anyway as it's a fantasy game with very OTT effects. As such, I think this is a good game for younger teenagers as well as adults.

The game's story is simple. A new energy drink was launched, but unfortunately, anyone that drank any of it turned into a mutant. You travel around the city meeting characters and completing missions (including side missions), which pushes the story along. It's very silly and OTT, but it's supposed to be.

The traversal and combat are great. It plays like a mix of Jet Set Radio or even a Tony Hawk game combined with a shooter that has crazy weapons. Once you get used to the controls you can fluidly grind, swing and bounce around the city, taking out enemies with your arsenal of insane guns. This is not a game where you want to stand still as you'll soon be overrun by mutants. You need to keep moving and there's a meter that builds up as you do which gives you more powerful attacks. There are lots of new outfits, weapons, upgrades and perks to unlock.

The controls do take some getting used to, particularly as you need to switch weapons quite regularly, for instance, you might want to set a giant mutant on fire with one gun, then blast him with a different gun for maximum damage before the flames go out. When that's combined with the bouncing around, grinding, swinging and jumping, it can be a little tricky at first, but stick with it and after an hour or two you'll get the hang of it.

Getting into a multiplayer match is seamless. The game uses Microsoft Azure for the online play, so it has dedicated servers. While playing the single player game you'll see phone booths dotted around the city.

The shady FizzCo drinks corporation has launched a new energy drink – with dire consequences: Overdrive has turned the residents of Sunset City into crazy mutated blobs intent on ripping you limb from limb. Armed with an increasingly preposterous arsenal (a gun that shoots acid-spraying FizzCo mascots is just one example), it's your job to clean up the town. This game is a riot. I absolutely loved it. It's goofy and dumb and vulgar and crude and all the better for it! While the game is set in one location, the city is broken up into several distinct areas, each with different enemies and challenges, and a memorable cast of characters who'll either assist you or ask for your help along the way. Navigation is the name of the game and if you've ever played the old Dreamcast classic Jet Set Radio, you'll have an idea about how you get around in Sunset Overdrive. Grinding, wall-running, bouncing way up into the air on vents dotted around the map, your move-set grows as you progress through the game until you can (in theory) make it from one side of the city to the other without ever touching the ground. I've read that the developers wanted to capture the spirit of a pinball game in Sunset Overdrive and I think they've done just that. You bounce around racking up massive scores in a bright, acid-coloured world full of mayhem, madness and plain old fun. Yep – fun. I can't think of many games in recent years that I've found so much stupid, mindless fun.

So I REALLY wanted to to like this. I have a PS4 and Xbox One and was really looking forward to a platform exclusive that did it for me, but Sunset Overdrive still isn't "the one".

To get this out of the way - the game just looks GREAT. Seriously. Good job here. Art style works, the world is colourful, animation is nice, big shout out to the explosion FX and it does a pretty good job of highlighting the routes in what could be a very confusing world.

You can read a ton of other reviews to find out about the gameplay, I just wanted to leave my feelings about it here. It's just way too fiddly and frenetic for my taste. I have it about 8 hours and just never really felt like I was in control. For me it kinda closely mirrors some of the mechanics in the old Tony Hawkes and Jet Set Radio games, but with added combat, and I was never a huge fan of those either. There's just too much going on after a while and maybe I'm getting old, but a game that runs at such a pace with so many controls (this thing uses every input on your pad, ALL THE TIME) is exhausting and not all that fun for me.

An ok effort then and you can add a star if this is the kind of game you've loved in the past, but it's not the game I wanted it to be. Feels a little like they threw everything at it and sometimes, less is more.

I watched the trailers and decided to buy the game as it looked fun. It's even funnier than the videos suggested. The gameplay is dynamic you can either do main quest, side quests, challenges or discover places in the world. The characters have unique style as the game itself. I love all the references to other games and jokes. There are jokes that mock the game being a game which I love too. It has beautiful graphics, it is really colorful and it has specific style. I also love the music.

Sunset Overdrive mixes the grinding of Jet Set Radio Future with the zombies and leftfield weaponry of Dead Rising, with the sandbox fun and missions of GTA with the firepower and energy of Crackdown to create a masterpiece. Gory, profane, repetitive, silly but always 100% fun. Such an entertaining game, just wish it was longer (oh, and it would be great if you could choose your soundtrack / radio station like GTA).
