Michael Ripper is probably best known to fans of the cinema for his cameo appearances in the Hammer Horror films - for whom he made no less than 35 during his career. However, there is a great deal more to the life and career of this great actor and this book gives full details of his work in Theatre and television, as well as his films. Written with the full co-operation of Michael and his family, packed with over 100 classic stills from Michael`s own collection, this is a tremendous book! An essential purchase for anyone interested in the life and career of a marvellous actor and gentleman!

This is very much a labour of love and as such it seems churlish to admit that it isn't actually very well written. Michael Ripper was a largely bit-part player who enlivened many a Hammer horror film as a coachman, innkeeper or policeman. He could play both comic and sinister and, despite a lack of real fame, attracted something of a cult following. I was part of that cult, particularly throughout my adolescence, and was amazed to see that a biography of the actor actually existed. For that reason alone, I love this book, despite its many failings and we Ripper fans owe the author a debt of gratitude, despite the work's many flaws. Although comprehensive in its approach, it offers no great insights (the comments from the aged actor himself are especially banal) and it is not particularly well written, comparing unfavourably with, say, Roger Lewis's quirky biography of Charles Hawtrey, "The Man who was Private Widdle". However, it is copiously illustrated and, wait for it, autographed by the Great Man himself. For that and, indeed, for the book's very existence, I for one am very grateful.
