As with his other book, Advanced Origami: An Artist's Guide to Performances in Paper, this book is big and full of color pictures and diagrams.
It is impecably edited and even comes with not one but two DvDs (yes, that's right) with explanations and comments.
In keeping with his own style, LaFosse doesn't just limit himself to showing how to fold a number of butterflies, but also expands it to give you some of the background and inspiration, making this a book not only to use as a reference but also to read for the pleasure of it.
How many origami books can boast about that, I ask you ?
I would recommend a thin, crisp paper for the models in this book. Shadow-fold paper from origami-shop.com is perfect. I think you really need something that holds the crease well, and something that is thin enough for the at times rather delicate and tiny folds required.
Interestingly there is a whole system of butterfly folds, so the author begins by introducing what he calls butterfly base. This basic shape can be folded from a variety of rectangular papers (which makes them interesting for folding butterflies from bus tickets) and Lafosse shows several variations and makes comments on what influence the paper dimensions have on the finished model. Of course he doesn't fail to provide how to fold the base from a square and shows a whole genealogy of possible variations, including color changes.
After that he also makes some comments on the possible wing decorations, which i found very useful and inspiring.
The last part contains the several butterfly variations. there are plenty of them in different levels of difficulties.
The diagrams are understandable, but contain a fair amount of steps (one or two per model) which involve estimations (aka no reference points). I, personally, don't like that too much. But as it is a creature from nature this is perfectly fine, there is not much that could go wrong. I would think the models are all intermediate, but beginners should be able to manage them if they refer to the recommended paper size or a little bigger.
After all it is a very good book and is rather difficult to stop folding his beautiful models. A must have for every origami library.
PS: I haven't looked into the DVD's yet... but I'm sure they are as gorgeous as the book.
