"Revelatory.... A fascinating examination into the lonely, prideful man behind the glimmering icon." ""Publishers Weekly"""

"It's not every day that I'm blown away by a book about a sports figure. But MICHAEL JORDAN: THE LIFE, by Roland Lazenby, ranks up there with the very best: "The Boys of Summer" by Roger Kahn, "Friday Night Lights" by Buzz Bissinger, and "Joe DiMaggio" by Richard Ben Cramer. The depth of reporting, his frequent ascent into poetry, and his intelligent analysis of the life of this complicated, fascinating American icon deserve Pulitzer Prize consideration. For the first time I understand what makes Michael Jordan tick. I was captivated, fascinated and beguiled from beginning to end." "Peter Golenbock, "New York Times"-bestselling author of "George" and "In the Country of Brooklyn"""

"What makes this portrayal especially worthwhile is the long trail Lazenby follows before the awesome career even begins." "New York Times Book Review's "Editor's Choice"""

"A lot has been written about arguably the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan, but Roland Lazenby's Michael Jordan: The Life is easily the definitive version. The journalist has covered Jordan's career for nearly thirty years and his knowledge of the game and of this miraculous player shows in what is one of the best sports biographies in years." ""Parade"""

"Lazenby's prose soars as dramatically and excitingly as does his subject. This is an immensely interesting biography of someone born in 1963 who, at least so far, seems to have lived the "American Dream" in ways and to an extent that few people have. His achievements are several and significant. He was born to loving parents, the fourth of five children, is a graduate of the University of North Carolina, and among the most talented and wealthiest of all who have played basketball. Currently, Michael Jordan is principal owner of the Charlotte franchise in the National Basketball Association. In this volume, Roland Lazenby provides an abundance of information and insights about Michael Jordan's achievements but I was even more interested in learning more about the person who achieved them.

As Lazenby explains, "I like to write about competitive personalities, especially those in the NBA. I like to write about their families. Among the zillion questions I had about MJ, I wanted to know where he came from, who the Jordans were. They were moonshiners, making and selling illegal liquor on North Carolina's Coastal Plain. So that's where his hard edge came from, I thought upon discovering who they were. Just about all the farmers and sharecroppers were moonshiners back in the day. That was their cash crop, the one that kept the family fed. They were tough-minded people, just like Jordan himself.

"I've written a book that builds his life from that background. Starting at the beginning, with the birth of his great grandfather Dawson Jordan, allows me to take the reader through the process of his family, his background, and the nurturing of his vast competitive nature. What's more, it's immensely fun to track his rise.

Exceptionally good biography, and believe me I have read plenty of them. I liked the way how the writer had done his background work, interviewing people, picking up small details but keeping the text fluent.

We get a deep look of Jordan's family and the background of it, dating way back to 19th century, his junior years, playing career and everything after that. We get to hear opinions from his friends, opponents and competitors and the critical voices are not shut down either. We get plenty of examples of his huge competitiveness, his unique physical abilities, his testing of his teammates and his ability to rise to occasion.

Perhaps the only thing I would like to hear about more was Jordan's intelligence and his charisma. They both get mentioned often and with all of Jordan's success both as a player and media figure and I have no doubt both are 100 % true but it would have been interesting to read more examples of these.

All in all however, one of the best sports biographies I have read, right up there with Jack Johnson, The Unforgivable Blackness

Great book. Covers EVERYTHING about Jordan.
From his ancestors which could explain where his drive comes from. To the off court stories with his family and how Nike came to him.
His success on the baseball court in his early years, his relation with his brother Larry and of course his basketball ascension from high school to the NBA.

Cant recommend it enough to anyone who is interested about Michael Jordan.

I always wanted to find a definitive book on the the exploits of MJ and this is it. What comes through is that Jordan was a relentless competitor both on and off the court which sometimes was to his own detriment. Historically looking back what he achieved was phenomenal. Mr Lazenby captures his life perfectly and also attributes plenty of kind words to Jordan's Mother who help steered him down the right path as much as she possibly could.

Must Read!

It has a lot of new info on MJ, especially on his family roots and personal life but is not that well written like Playing for keeps which also covers better his basketball career.
