By Mr P VINE VOICE on 25 July 2002
Format: Audio CD
This is one of my favourite albums of all time.
Its big band and small group jazz released in 1970 and influenced positively by the rock music of the late sixties.
As well as great jazzers such as Alan Skidmore, John Surman, Kenny Wheeler, Ray Warleigh, Tony Oxley, John Marshall and others it also features guitarists Ray Russell and Chris Spedding and, fresh from Cream, Jack Bruce on bass.
It covers a lot of territory and is truly a work of art.
Gibbs has released other fine albums but again in my opinion nothing to rival this.
The last track And On The Third Day says it all. A slow haunting melody with poignant solos (A belter from Surman on baritone sax) all underpinned by Bruce's stunningly original, gut-wrenching bass counterpoint It all boils up into a flock of seagulls crescendo as all the sax players wail themselves hoarse and then fade away leaving Bruces few notes to end matters. A masrepiece.

I agree with everything the previous reviewer has said. A great album! I would just like to add (in case it isn't clear... and it wasn't clear to me) that if you order the Vocalion album, "Mike Gibbs & Tanglewood 63", then you get a double album comprising this album and the "Tanglewood '63" album.
