Michael Bird is a writer, art historian and radio broadcaster. He was born in London and educated at Merton College, Oxford. His books include monographs on Lynn Chadwick, Sandra Blow, Bryan Wynter and George Fullard, and 'The St Ives Artists: A Biography of Place and Time'. His bestselling '100 Ideas that Changed Art' has been translated into nine languages.
Michael's first full-length children's book, published in 2016, is 'Vincent's Starry Night and Other Stories: A Children's History of Art', a journey through 40,000 years of art in 68 stories. He says, 'I wanted to capture something of the moment of making, the mix of personalities, ideas, materials, ambitions and even crazy accidents that results in art. The stories are all based on historical facts – but I'd like to think they also work as stories in their own right.'
Michael is currently a Goodison Fellow at the British Library, where he is researching the Artists' Lives oral history archive for a book and an exhibition. He lives in Cornwall with his wife, the artist Felicity Mara.
