The firmware behaving poorly in the light of a bad SD card has lost it a star I'm afraid. I have fed this back to Mevo, who were pretty good in their support, so maybe they'll fix it in a firmware update at some time.
I would recommend it though. Nice unit
App updated today and now it is very Vimeo orientated offering monthly subscription to unlock new features and I can't get 4K to record at all.
This is quite an interesting device but some of the product information about it's 4K mode I feel is a bit misleading.
Record in 4K @ 40 Mbps - Well yes, but only when it is connected to an external power supply and face detection, cropping and grid view are disabled (so it becomes a low Mbps action camera that needs a power source) - No streaming either.
I also found (like others have reported) that the provided "Sandisk EDGE" 16Gb card causes errors (replace with a quality one and all will be well).
Also the company that makes them is now owned by Vimeo Inc so assurance support for other streaming services will be maintained would be advisable - could work one day and stop the next.
Only one Mevo Plus can be controlled by the app and their online support says "The Mevo app is only available on iOS and Android mobile devices. There is currently no desktop application or software for controlling Mevo."
Other than the above limitations it works pretty good, of course the sensor is only 4K so some of the cropped frame areas you stream can look a bit grainy and the camera only adjust the lighting level for the whole picture so if the selected area is less well illuminated it will be dark.
Build quality is good and I am using it with a mini tripod.
I have recorded local which works well and every file it has recorded has transferred to my Android Tablet (Lenovo YT-X703F) error free (only the lowest res recordings can be viewed over the Wifi connection even at 5Ghz).
Connection and use range is also very good and I have controlled it from the living room with Mevo in the garden (about 8 metres to tablet).
I have tried live streaming to Facebook which worked but could not see how to post text updates while live (looking on YouTube it seems many use a second tablet / smartphone).
Audio recorded by its stereo microphones is pretty good and you can adjust the levels plus VU metres (it did not seem to like using the mic in my tablet).
Again, many uses seem to use extra hardware to record sound and if you want to connect to the camera you need the optional MEVO BOOST ADD BatterY+LAN (the battery in this will also allow it to become a 4K camera).
The frame crop selection and control works well (check out their support videos on how to use) and can track faces.
As a streaming device it does seem to be an option but is rather expensive (as is the boost option).
The first question that I asked myself is, what does this have over an iPhone camera for live streaming and recording?
The iPhone camera is great but the Mevo is better. The main advantage however, is the fact that you can do the editing in real time. This is most useful for live streaming but it also saves buckets of time when recording to the internal memory.
The app allows you to set up regions of view - focus on someone's face, or on their hands if you are recording a manual skill for example. Set up several regions, crops and views before you go live. Then, start recording and you can seamlessly switch from one view to another. If the view changes, pan in and out and it smoothly zooms in and out at the speed of your choice. Make it quick or make it very subtly slow - the choice is yours.
The only problem I had was finding a provider for my live streaming test. Vimeo charges something outragious like £60 per month for a subscription and I could not find a way that the app would do anything without paying. I got Facebook live streaming to work but this will limit the resolution to 720 and not allow HD or 4K recording. YouTube took 24 hours to allow live streaming and even then I could not get it to work.
The best way, if you don't need a live stream, is to record onto the enclosed SD card and publish it later. This allows HD uploads but there will be situations where you need live streaming - you may need to pay for a good quality streaming service.
The camera is tiny!!! Comes with an adapter to attach it to a tripod. The internal battery lasts honestly just over an hour of recording but it comes with a long 3m cable.
I feel that for this price, they could have provided some kind of case, even a soft bag, to put the Mevo in - (The mevo case is prohibitively expensive) but this is my gripe with a lot of products.
So, in summary, an excellent quality camera for live streaming if you are subscribed to a good service or facebook for lower quality. The real time editing via the app is where it comes into its own. The quality is great (some reviews have complained about grainy quality but I have had NO problems). It is pricey but I feel you get what you pay for. Where's the case guys??
Thoroughly recommended if you are looking for a small recording device for recording or live streaming
