Review

A truly remarkable book, profound and deeply moving! This first person account of a lifelong seeker s apprenticeship with Shun Yuan, a gentle Western-born Adept of the Tao and Taiji martial arts, enthrals the reader both as a teaching story and an introduction to as remarkable a man as any hero out of fiction. In the end, one is left with a sublime sense of inevitability and peace. An amazing achievement! --Irving Karchmar, author of Master of the Jinn: A Sufi Novel

(...) a great inspirational book... the authors experience comes to life... It is definitely a book that is worth reading and learning from over and over again. (Path to Wisdom blog)

In the ordinary world we don't often go to the ends of the earth to seek the extraordinary. Fortunately for us, Robert Sheaffer did, and wrote this book so that we could all travel the journey with him. I was captivated from his very first words, and felt like I was right there with him every step.

Sheaffer writes with a refreshing, guileless sincerity, that infuses the book with light-hearted humour and profoundly moving moments. Knowing that he is writing not a fable or a fairy tale, but real experiences makes it all the more mystical, all the more magical and all the more mysterious.

Robert leads us through teaming rainstorms, down alleyways, into teashops, parks, and on to the top of mountains all in search of one who can show him "the Way." Interested in the ancient Chinese internal martial arts, his travels to Taipei lead him to Shun Yuan - one who has reached the level of "Adept" and steeped in esoteric Taoist mysticism. Their encounter is profoundly transformational, as much for Robert as it is for the reader.

A truly remarkable book, profound and deeply moving! This first person account of a lifelong seeker's apprenticeship with Shun Yuan, a gentle, Western-born Adept of the Tao and Taiji martial arts, enthralls the reader both as a teaching story and an introduction to as remarkable a man as any hero out of fiction. In the end, one is left with a sublime sense of inevitability and peace. An amazing achievement!

The unfolding of the 10 Methods of the Heavenly Dragon are beautifully told within the intricacies of Bagua, the "eight symbols" used in Taoist cosmology and the elegant, deadly forms of Chinese martial arts, each method translated into the hard learned lessons of everyday life. The Tao emphasizes getting past your preconceptions and your ego; in effect, getting out of your own way. I for one am very grateful for the lesson.

Ten Methods of the Heavenly Dragon is a story of Robert Sheaffer's study with his teacher, Shun Yuan, whilst living in Taiwan. It is a story of adventure, spirituality and self discovery that you can be sure to return to time and time again.

The Author has a fantastic writing style and has succeeded in describing how the martial way can be used to enhance all areas of our lives - something that I believe all martial artists should aim for.

Moving, insightful and inspiring, I already see this book as a classic.

I can really recommend this book, ` Ten Methods of the Heavenly Dragon `, by Robert Schaeffer. It will interest anyone interested in Buddhism, Taoïsm and the Chinese internal martial arts. Besides being a real joy to read, I finished the book within a couple of days ( it reads like someone is telling you a story ), it will give you a insight in how, in a truly Chinese cultural setting, eastern philosophy and the internal martial arts ( hsing yi, tai chi chuan and pa kua chang ) are intertwined, in a truly natural way, in daily practice, in living as a daily practice. Surely a book that will be picked up many times. I am a practitioner of Yin style Pa Kua Chang, and deeply interested in Buddhism and Taoïsm, the book, the story and the Adept Shun Yuan truly inspired me to take my own study and practice to a higher level. Marco van Trijffel, the Netherlands .

Or, as the case may be, the Adept.

'Ten methods of the Heavenly Dragon' is a deeply human account of one man's journey towards that greatest of human victories: mastery of oneself.

Engaging and informative, open and inviting from the onset, the author conveys a genuine desire to share with the reader not only his experience, but that which he has attained during his exploration of the worlds within.

Recommended reading for anyone interested in what lies beyond that which the current state of mind perceives.
