Product Description

Review

"Lowry masterfully presents another thought-provoking, haunting tale in this third novel, a companion to The Giver and Gathering Blue." Publishers Weekly, Starred
"Lowry moves far beyond message, writing with a beautiful simplicity rooted in political fable, in warm domestic detail, and in a wild natural world, just on the edge of realism." Booklist, ALA, Starred Review
"Told in simple, evocative prose, this companion to The Giver (1993) and Gathering Blue (2000) can stand on its own as a powerful tale of great beauty." Kirkus Reviews, Starred --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Format: Mass Market Paperback
Lois Lowry is one of those unique authors who has won the John Newbery Medal for children's literature twice. Once for the first book in this trilogy and once for a book about the Holocaust called Number the Stars. (Just as an aside only one other author has ever done that Madeleine L'Engle who I would also recommend highly.) I would begin by recommending any of her books; they are all worth the time and the effort. This trilogy is set in a post apocalyptic world. The first two books each focus on different community's who have recovered from the devastation differently, both have strengths and both have weaknesses. And a young boy must heal them both and the land if either is to survive.

The Giver
Lois Lowry

Jonas is a young boy who lives in a community with a lot of technology and many rules about it. He has only seen an airplane twice for planes were not suppose to over fly villages, it was against the rules. Children of the same age are raised together and each December they move up a grade, when the reach the age of twelve they are selected for occupational training Jonas in talking to his friend states about selections: "Jonas Shrugged. It didn't worry him, how could someone not fit in? The Community was so meticulously ordered, the choices so carefully made." However all the other Twelve's were assigned and Jonas was skipped then at the end of the ceremony it was announced that he had been selected he was chosen to become the `receiver of memory.' He was to learn all the history and story of the people and become an advisor to the council that ruled the village. It only happened every so many generations and only 1 keeper of memories was installed in each village. Jonas and his family take in an infant who is not maturing and growing quickly enough.

When vivid imagination blends with an original writing style, beautiful books like Messenger might come out. I was completely caught up by it and I was so eager to turn the pages just to see what will come next. Now I cannot wait to get my hands on the next one from this series.

Lois Lowry can take important and complex social issues and write them for "young adult" readers. And, as with a majority of the excellent books written for young people, this one can appeal to a child my age -- considerably over 21 years old.

This book is the third in a trilogy -- THE GIVER and GATHERING BLUE being the first two. It's helps to have read the first two, but you can still get a lot out of THE MESSENGER if you read it first.

This book deals with basic issues in life. Matt lives in a village that has a lot of issues facing us today -- such as, immigration, toleration and basic freedom. He sees what he first felt was a free society turning into something he isn't sure he knows any more. And in the process, he also finds that he has a unique gift for healing, but that when he practices the gift, it is at some cost to himself.

I won't spoil the story by telling how it ends -- but it caused a grown up kid like me -- considerably over 21 years old -- to cry. And I feel like I'm a better person for having read it.

And while you're at it -- try reading THE GIVER and GATHERING BLUE as well. If you take the message seriously, you won't be the same person you were before.

I never knew that The Giver and Gathering Blue (Also by Lois Lowry) were part of a trilogy with this book. This book perfectly brought together the stories of the two previous books.
