While this recording dates from 1969 and is a remastered ADD, EMI have obviously looked after their archives. The Stereo stage here is wide and excellent. The performance also has some well known names from the French Opera Comique. Both Michael Dens and Mady Mesple complement each other as lead roles. I have heard other recordings/performances of this work, but none seem to live up to the spirit of this recording. Andre Messager was a greatly under rated French Composer and deserves more recognition. I can recommend this recording to anybody interested in French Comic Opera

A really good CD, well-rounded and comprehensive, marred only by the lack of a full translation of the french text into english.

Many years ago I found an lp of Veronique and loved the music. Later on I came across a piano score which was a delight to play. Now I have this cd which is also a delight. It's a very good recording and thoroughly recommended!

HASH(0xa21515e8) out of 5 stars Pleasant tunes and Gallic charm 12 Dec. 2005
By L. E. Cantrell - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Source: Studio recording made by EMI Music France at Salle Wagram in Paris in January 1969.

Sound: Good analogue stereo, digitally re-mastered in 2001.

Documentation: No libretto. Short biographical note on Andre Messager, who was not only a popular composer but the conductor for the premieres of Charpentier's "Louise" and Debussy's "Pelleas et Melisande." Short summary of the plot, by act. Track list identifies each track as dialogue or as a specific type of music, as well as identifying the characters singing and providing timings.

Format: Disk 1, overture, Act 1, tracks 2-18; Act II, tracks 19-25; 48:46. Disk 2, Act II (conclusion), tracks 1-12, Act III, tracks 13-25; 47:33.

Cast: Veronique/Helene - Mady Mesple; Vicomte Florestan de Valincourt - Michel Dens; Agathe - Andrea Guiot; Estelle/Ermerance - Denise Benoit; Coquenard - Jean-Christophe Benoit; Loustot - Michel Dunand; Seraphin - Jacques Pruvost; Denise - Anne Tallard. Conductor: Jean-Claude Hartemann, with the Orchestre de l'Association des Concerts Lamoureux and Chours Rene Duclos.

This is a pleasing little French operette, perhaps more distinguished for its charm than for its musical quality. Its story is a confection in which Vicomte Florestan, a dashing, but impoverished and feckless young man-about-Paris (a sort of primordial Maurice Chevalier), is about to enter into an arranged marriage with a wealthy heiress from the provinces. Said heiress just happens (of course) to overhear the young man complaining about his fate to his most recent mistress, the owner of a flower shop. In approved operetta fashion, the heiress obtains a job at the shop under an assumed name in order to get back at the Vicomte. Confusions and misapprehensions follow. The wandering bridegroom-to-be and the supposed shopgirl spend a day on the town, which includes taking a donkey ride and then on a swing (see cover picture), giving occasion for two hugely popular duets. Love (naturally!) takes a hand and in the end the financially-challenged aristocrat and the spunky heiress end up in each other's arms, just as it was obvious from the very first bars of the overture that they must.

This is one of a series of twelve recordings of French operettas (including an unusually good "Merry Widow" heavily disguised as "La Veuve joyeuse") issued by EMI France in the 1960s and early 70s. The series was of high quality and strove for true operetta form, avoiding the self-consciously operatic approach on the one hand and the Broadway musical style on the other.

The two leads, Mady Mesple and Michel Dens, were superb singers, almost unmatched specialists in the French operatic repertory, and equally fine for this lighter fare, too.

"Veronique," so far as I can tell, never made much impact here in North America. In France, though, it is regarded as one of the foremost of French operettas. In translated form, the English took it to heart for many years as a sort of junior-grade Gilbert and Sullivan. However you take it, "Veronique" offers a pleasurable 96 minutes-worth of entertainment and deserves five stars.

NOTE 1: My countryman, M. Marleau, has prepared an excellent list of sixteen operas and operettas in which Mady Mesple appears. It shows up when you search Amazon classical music under her name. You could do worse than spend some time checking her out.

NOTE 2: As operatic rules of thumb go, I can't think of a better one than the presence of Michel Dens as a probable indicator of a good production.

HASH(0xa1bc4f3c) out of 5 stars THE COMPOSER'S MOST SUCCESSFULL OPERETTA 10 Aug. 2002
By ALAIN ROBERT - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Created in 1898,VERONIQUE has remained MESSAGER's greatest international success in the field of operetta. It was seen in VIENNA in 1900,in LONDON in 1903 and even at the APOLLO theatre in 1904(495 performances).DUO DE L'ESCARPOLETTE and DECI-DELA are famous songs recorded seperately by singers like YVONNE PRINTEMPS and a few others. There is also an ENGLISH version available on cd.It's good to know that a charming work like VERONIQUE can live on over the years. This recording made in 1969 is excellent. At my humble point of view,if you don't enjoy this delightful operetta,it simply means that you are allergic to the genre.Try it,you may like it because that allergy is contagious.Am i being ironic or what?
