Product Description

From the Back Cover

"If the interpreter of Ezekiel must be a careful scholar with a
gift for communication and a heart for Christian mission, IVP has assigned
this one wisely.

Chris Wright is a useful guide on this painful, fruitful, ugly, beautiful
journey; he shows how the prophet loves his Pentateuch, and how Christ and
the apostles love him."

Concerning the first vision in the book of Ezekiel and the great theologian of the Reformation John Calvin claimed that he could make little of it. Although John Calvin goes on to write much that is good about Ezekiel that is not surprising as at that time there was no way that Calvin could have been privy too the cultural knowledge that Ezekiel's readers would of had, that would have helped then understand much of the imagery in the first vision and the book as a whole. Christopher Wright does a more than adequate job here in opening up the text and provides the necessary cultural insight to give us a good understanding of the message of the book. As such this stands well in the 'Bible speaks today' tradition of commentaries as it is reasonably easy to read but academic enough to deal with any translation difficulties and of course the previously mentioned cultural motifs in the book. I certainly found it helpful when I did a sermon series on the book and later when I had overviewed part of the book as one of the speakers at a 'Keswick at home' event a few years ago. I'd happily give it more than four stars but can't bring myself to give it five as I have already bestowed that honour on the 'NIV application commentary' of Ezekiel. So 4 1/2 stars would probably be about right!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Commentary 10 Oct. 2006
By Lloyd Long - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Typical of The Bible Speaks Today series the author lists more than twenty Ezekiel commentaries, and he quotes extensively from a couple. Formerly a seminary professor of O.T. studies he has a good grasp of all the Bible and uses other scriptures well to derive sane and sensible meanings from Ezekiel.

As a former pastor Mr. Wright communicates well. As a layman I found this commentary to be a real page-turner. Less than 5% is devoted to "preaching."

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Commentary on Ezekiel! 7 July 2009
By Dave Vandeveer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This commentary does an outstanding job of providing the big picture and context of Ezekiel which is necessary for understanding the details. The details come alive in their historical setting, and Ezekiel's message for today comes through loud and clear. The neat thing about Christopher JH Wright is that he writes in a way that anyone can understand. He is clearly a well informed scholar, but his writing is not academic. He brings the history of Israel alive and relates it to the gospel of Jesus Christ. I have read many of his books and feel that he is more in touch with God's heart than any other author I've come across. Two other books of his I would recommend are: 'The Mission of God' and 'Old Testament Ethics For The People of God'. Both of these should be required reading for all Christians.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great treatment of a difficult text. 19 Aug. 2011
By theos_locos - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
One of my favorite all around commentaries (applications to the contemporary world, depth, scholarship etc.). Used this book as a basis for a full semester graduate class on Ezekiel. Good treatment of the text critical issues without pushing too many varied and conflicting view points that tend to generate more heat than light. Good bibliography for leading you to more specific studies. Very little original language work here so if you are not a fan of Hebrew, no worries there. If you're looking for an excellent treatment of Ezekiel from someone with a conservative view of Scripture, look no further. Wright is a great scholar with a mission heart (see his book "The Mission of God;" also excellent). Thus, he understands that theology must live and breathe else it is a waste of time.

By Charles M. Franks - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
The Message of Ezekiel by C.J.H. Wright is clearly written and is very good at identifying the main themes of each section of Ezekiel. It is excellent in providing essential historical context. Although written for non-scholars, it deals effectively with difficult passages for which there are multiple interpretations, briefly discussing each interpretation. This commentary also gives the reader a sense of the overall theme of the book of Ezekiel and explains how Ezekiel's message is relevant to issues in the contemporary world.

4.0 out of 5 stars book about Ezekiel by a British theologian 21 Mar. 2011
By dennislbaker - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
My initial reading in this volume has been very satisfactory. He takes the text of the Bible seriously and doesn't engage in higher criticism. Instead he seeks to illuminate the text in whatever ways are available to him. I was especially impressed by his comments in which he pointed out that the enemy of Israel is God, not Nebuchadnezzar. And yet, very much unlike an enemy, he appoints Ezekiel to stand watch for Israel.
