No solo material either (Klark Kent's Don't Care, Sting's Spread A Little Happiness for instance), but this is still an essential purchase, particularly when you realise you could buy the re-issued 5 CD's together for the same price and miss out on the extra tracks, and being squeezed onto 4 discs keeps the price down too!
This collection stands as a solid defence of their career (only 5 short years from nowhere to world domination). If you get this, there's nothing else TO get (unless you track down the live double CD from a few years ago) as here you get all your favourites in one fell swoop.
Maybe the Sting solo albums?
If you've not got the lot, or you have just some crusty old tapes and scratched records, then I would recommend it.
For people who don't know what the Police were about and their background: the book makes interesting reading (without it being a long rambling biography). If you know it all already, well, look at the pictures then! :)
Only 1 problem: it won't fit in my CD rack! the CDs are mounted inside the covers of the book.
Dont get me wrong, theres alot of obscurities here too, and some stuff that is downright strange and will leave you in no doubt as to why youve never heard them before. Alot of this stuff might even turn off fans of the bands more mainstream music, but for the most part I considered it a solid, enjoyable, and almost definitive collection.
Additionally you get the first single (With Henry Padovani on guitar instead of Andy Summers. Padovani is simply not nearly as good), and also all of the studio single B-sides and about half of the live single B-sides (which you'll have worked out means that this box isn't definitive despite the description). You also get The Police's contribution to the soundtrack for the film Brimstone & Treacle. With one, maybe two exceptions these tracks are throwaways which are simply not worth worrying about missing. In fact they disrupt the nice flow of the original albums.
Buy the studio albums instead - I'd give them a five star rating!
Otherwise Police is Police. Nice to the ears!
