Product Description

A Month in the Country is a 1987 British film directed by Pat O'Connor. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by J. L. Carr, and stars Colin Firth, Kenneth Branagh, Natasha Richardson and Patrick Malahide. The screenplay was by Simon Gray. Set in rural Yorkshire during the 1920s, the film follows a destitute World War I veteran employed to carry out restoration work on a Medieval mural discovered in a rural church while coming to terms with the after-effects of the war. Shot during the summer of 1986 and featuring an original score by Howard Blake, the film has been neglected since its 1987 cinema release and it was only in 2004 that an original 35 mm film print was discovered due to the intervention of a fan.

I had forgotten how excellent this film was, but it's superb. Odd to see Messrs Branagh and Firth so young, and the latter putting in early practice on a stammer! The setting is magical and the 'uncovered' wall painting just the job - clever artist to paint old style.

The way the two men are trying to rebuild a life after the Great War is well put over and understated.

The dvd opening page is confusing (and I do speak Spanish) but once cracked, all is ok and you can watch it all with only the dvd wrapper to suggest it is not a standard UK dvd.

Worth every penny.

A Month in the Country is one of my most treasured books. I gave the movie a five-star
rating based on my love of the book and my faith in the actors.
It is unfathonamable that the DVD is not available for playing
in the USA.
I am editing this cuz
you can watch it on youtube
